Calais migrant crisis – what’s it REALLY about?

Last Updated: August 1, 2015By

Perhaps This Writer is getting the wrong end of the stick, but isn’t the problem based here in the UK, with the failure of our under-funded and under-staffed Border Force (as it’s currently called)?

This situation has made a fool of David Cameron and the claims he has made since 2010 that his government can control immigration – both legal and illegal.

Harriet Harman should be demanding that he take action to protect the interests of UK citizens – yes – but she should also be shouting from the rooftops the fact that his immigration policy is in tatters and that he has brought this crisis down on the British people.

Labour’s acting leader has written to David Cameron calling for compensation from the French government for UK people affected by the Calais crisis.

Harriet Harman said the UK government had “ignored repeated warnings” about the worsening situation at Calais.

The problem is an EU one because the Southern border of the EU is as porous as a string vest. There are estimates of at least a million people moving towards Libya most of whom want to get to Britain.
You are correct though that the Customs before they became the Border Force was slashed to ribbons by a Tory government decades ago, which does not help.

The UK Border Agency or as it has been called since 2013 UK Visas and Immigration operated this side of the channel. Cuts to it have no bearing on Calais. Neither does the government’s efforts to control immigration successful or not. This is a problem for the French. The success of our ecvobomy, the high level of benefits and the fact that our language is English makes us a preferred destination for migrants. The problems in Calais are a failure of the French to process the message grants as asylum seekers or not. At least we have a secure border compared with the rest of Europe.

You’re absolutely right that cuts to the UK system have no bearing on Calais – but then, we’re not discussing Calais. What the French do is up to them. The problem here is the UK system’s failure to control a situation that should be controllable. It is not a problem for the French because these migrants aren’t trying to get to – and live in – France. It’s our government’s problem.
Your cuckooland ideas about why these migrants want to come are part of the problem, by the way: The economy has not been successful – at least, I don’t know anybody who has benefited from any improvement. Benefits are being pushed through the floor by that blood-soaked Duncan Smith person you adore. As for our language being useful to them – why, in that case, has so much effort been expended on making legal immigrants learn it?
We do not have a secure border, otherwise we would not have a crisis.

As I believe it, it is the responsibility of the first “safe” country an asylum seeker reaches to assess their need and act accordingly. The asylum seeker does not have the right to chose a country as if he/she was a tourist going on holiday. However, with the main routes starting through a very few countries, such as Italy, and the numbers being so great with all the conflicts today, it would not be fair to insist that these few countries took the full brunt of immigration of those who pass assessment. The EU is trying to work out a fair distribution but Cameron and the UK are simply not playing ball, as usual.

With the MSM headlines all screaming we need more fences, send in the army, we’re being overrun etc, I was glad to see the front page of my paper of choice saying “This is not a swarm…these are people who need our help”.
