Yvette Cooper calls for freeze on Lords appointments – BBC News
Given that David Cameron is set to send even more of his cronies – whose contribution to Cameron’s Tories will have more to do with their position than any worth to the country – into the Upper House in the Dissolution Honours, Ms Cooper has a point, wouldn’t you say?
There should be a freeze on the appointment of new peers until the House of Lords has been reformed, Labour leadership contender Yvette Cooper says.
She said it was time to “break the logjam” with more peers attending the Lords than ever before.
There are currently 781 peers eligible to take part in Lords proceedings.
A new list of peerages is expected next week.
The Dissolution Honours List is made following the end of every Parliament.

the lords is at bursting point it should have equal membership. it’s role is to debate the workings of the government and to make sure that policies are fair and lawful among other duties
the lords is certainly over subscribed as the cost of this house of peers comes in at 300 to 400 pound per day per person should you be lucky enough to attend
many of the peers today have a disability and should not really be in attendance at all as there not contributing to any of the debates
All lords over the age of 66 should retire to make way for the new lords but overall their numbers should never exceed 500 at any one time as that is all you need to fulfill your remit as a lord in the house
the way where going now with lords is madness and that madness needs to stop now and fast
i would like to clarify a small point when i say a disability i am meaning that the persons suffers from a mental impairment so as to not be of any use in a debate of which is important not only to the house but to the country as a whole

Could not agree more it’s become more like a cattle market, a crumbling edifice. Reform more needed than welfare a total waste of tax payers money. I would donate a kidney to go there each day to fall asleep and get £300.00 + a day, at least I could keep my wife and I warm over winter.

That would be utterly counter-productive.
We’d end up with an overwhelming number of new Tory lords. Does Angus MacNeil really want that?
The point being that if none of the other parties appointed Lords, the Tories would really have to stop too. They wouldn’t get away with carrying on ad infinitum.
These are Tories. They won’t stop because it will give them an advantage.
I certainly do agree with her. Not only should there be a freeze but a big reduction in these grossly overpaid and unnecessary titles.
The Lords needs replacing entirely, not reforming. The make up of the Lords should directly reflect the percentage of the vote each party gets, as far as that is possible.
It is surely corrupt for any government to keep appointing peers that support their political party. Whichever government is in power, I’ve never understand how this is allowed in a supposed democratic country.
Not so sure about a freeze. Would suggest a cull, if its good enough for seals, deer etc., then more than good enough for these scroungers and spongers.
