Labour’s housing plans could kill the Bedroom Tax

Last Updated: September 28, 2015By

About time. This will kill the Tory Bedroom Tax stone dead.

Labour is considering backing a mass public housebuilding programme on a scale not seen since the mid-70s.

John Healey, the former Treasury minister appointed by Jeremy Corbyn as shadow housing minister, will say on Monday that the state could build 100,000 new council houses and housing association homes a year to drive down the UK’s spiralling housing benefit bill and tackle the affordability crisis.

It would involve almost quadrupling the current number of affordable homes being built. Healey, who has previously said his priority is the decline in home ownership, proposes the homes should be for sale as well as rent.

Corbyn made housing one of the totemic issues in his campaign for the Labour leadership and he has since said it is a top three policy priority. The proposal, which is not yet official Labour policy, represents a marked change from Ed Miliband’s stance. He campaigned with a pledge to build 200,000 homes a year, without saying how many of those would be for private sale.

About time……My less well off family face hundreds of other applications for every house that comes up for availability. It forces them to seek accommodation in the private sector rental market. This rent is bound to increase with the latest tax news that interest relief on buy to let will be removed.by this Government. Not sure that housing should be sold on as not convinced council housing sales was properly implemented when the cash ran out. Large house accommodation will also be needed for large families as the bedroom tax has hardly encouraged any movement of larger council houses to downsize into flats or smaller roomed houses….

Fantastic news! Let us just hope and pray that Labour wins the General Election in 2020 and that this plan is implemented, and that the evil “bedroom tax” is repealed at the same time.

Fantastic news! Let us hope that Labour win the 2020 election, and that this policy is implemented at once, and that the evil “bedroom tax” legislation is repealed immediately.

Just read a blog about the Upper Tribunal says ALL bedroom Tax decisions unlawfully determined, so if he gets a hold of a copy (it’s a very long report) he has ammunition against the Tories. SPeye Joe (Welfarwrites).

A great idea and a long overdue one and reply from Labour to the tories about the heinous stealth tax that should not have even been created in the first place, thank Thatcher for that one, it’s high time it was long gone; it has caused so much damage and heartache!

i do hope so, for the sake of people like my son who desperately needs ground floor accommodation and can’t get it. he can’t get DLA,/PIP. he’s in the ESA WRAG group. even though neither fibromyalgia/arthritis are known to have ever been cured and in fact are known to get worse over time.
