MPs to debate ‘English votes’ plans

Last Updated: October 22, 2015By

Is anybody else in two minds about this?

The Tories want to make sure only English MPs vote on English issues, because they believe it means the Conservative Party will rule England forever – but they haven’t realised that the English people will probably get utterly fed up with their despotism very soon and take appropriate steps to remove them.

There’s also the fact that there are very few England-only issues in the UK – because England has such a large population relative to the other countries in the UK that any measures affecting English people tend to affect the rest as well, as a knock-on effect.

Perhaps the best solution would have been a convention for MPs to request that only English MPs vote on particular issues, on which it has been determined that only English people would be affected?

Your thoughts?

A row has erupted over plans to bring in “English votes for English laws,” ahead of a Commons debate.

MPs from English seats will get an effective veto on bills that apply to England only under the plans.

Ministers say their “fair and balanced” proposals will “give the English more say over their own destiny”.

But Labour and the SNP oppose the plans. The SNP said they “simply exacerbate the further alienation of Scotland from the UK Parliament”.

Labour said they risked creating “two tiers” of MPs at Westminster.

    Conservatives introduce Trade Union bill.

Scotland and Wales say they will oppose the bill, and outright ignore it.

Suddenly, the ‘English votes for English laws’ debate is back on the table.

    Coincidence?

I personally do not feel comfortable at all with the idea of the ‘English Votes for English Laws, Plans or whatever. At the very best it is a Gimmick at the worst it smacks of serious propaganda undertones. England has always enjoyed the vast majority of MPs in Parliament simply because the Populace dwarfs the 3 other members of the UK put together. I tend to agree with you Mike – in that the Tories see it as a route to govern England themselves. Its unnecessary and all highly distasteful.

Don’t trust them. If they’re keen that’s a clue it’s bad for us. And it’ll help them remain in power along with boundary changes and voter registration changes.

Totally crass. England don’t need EVEL since they get what they want anyway due to their superior numbers. With the speaker getting to decide what is “English only” for a particular issue, it would probably depend on what side of bed they got out of that morning. As has been said, it is purely to avoid the annoying off-chance that they might lose a vote once in a blue moon.
