Global warming and corporate irresponsibility – with Jonathan Pie [STRONG LANGUAGE]

If you’ve made it to the weekend, treat yourself to some Pie.

This skit might look as though it’s about being made to look like a lunatic in Piccadilly Circus, but in fact it refers to Volkswagen fiddling its environmental credentials and the huge crimes against humanity perpetrated by the corporate world in general.

Yes, very good, Jonathan. So, Exxon knew about global warming 25 years ago? Well, I knew about it over 30 years ago. When I taught Environmental Studies (a position for which I was scarcely qualified) it seemed to me that the part of the world which would suffer most was the Middle East. The Sahel was shrinking, the Sahara extending; people trying to farm in those areas suffered decreasing rainfall and decreasing crop yields year on year and the situation was getting worse – quite quickly as things have turned out. It seemed to me that the people in the Middle East would find themselves under enormous environmental pressure and would be forced to migrate. Northwards into Europe seemed to be the obvious choice and people from those affected areas have been migrating to Europe in increasing numbers for many years with a dramatic increase this year. I wonder why, if over 25 years ago I could see the way in which this particular wind was blowing why the Thatchers, Blairs, Bushes and other world leaders couldn’t see it too. Environmental damage could well have caused small, but significant tensions in north African states leading to today’s religious, political and human chaos.

The terrible events in Paris this week are mainly the result of political terrorism: a vicious
viral strain of political/military Islam. But it seems probably that the world’s inabillity or unwillingness to tackle climate change is a part of the problem, too. VW’s lies are just a footnote.

The terrorism in Paris has nothing to do with Islam, either political or military – just with murderers using Islam as a shield.

I’m not sure about your reply. I think the terrorists are using Islam as an excuse as well as, perhaps, a shield. In my view this is to do with a group of puritanical, fanatical muslims. The Christian equivalent might be found in the days of Savanarola. (spelling?)

About them using Islam as an excuse and a shield, I agree. But this means they don’t represent Islam in any way at all, other than lip-service.
Remember, 99.97 per cent of Muslims want nothing to do with these people and consider them to have nothing to do with their religion.
