Another Cameron U-turn – attacking migration by attacking those without work

Last Updated: December 13, 2015By

David Cameron will be happier attacking the benefits of EU migrants who don’t have jobs – the UK never paid them anyway.

He’ll be campaigning for the abandonment of the system by which immigrant jobseekers use the E303 form to receive the same amount of benefits as they would be paid in their own country, while they seek work in the UK.

This Blog understands that the current arrangement means the UK government would then claw the money back from the jobseekers’ country of origin.

This of course means that anyone wishing to move from their own country to the UK to seek a job would have their own government to blame if the loss of benefits proposed by Cameron meant they could not go. It’s a classic piece of Tory bait-and-switch, with the other EU countries as the consumers who think they’re being offered something better than they’ll get.

According to this story, they seem to be swallowing it. How long will it last, one wonders?

David Cameron is ready to consider a “plan B” to curb EU migration to the UK, which would involve strict new limits on benefit payments to out-of-work migrants rather than those in jobs, as he seeks to cobble together a new deal for Britain in Europe.

The prime minister will take centre stage at a working dinner with European leaders in Brussels on Thursday evening, where he will say that concerns about migration are a major issue for the British people and that they need addressing before an in/out referendum to be held by the end of 2017.

He is expected to abandon his protracted battle for treaty changes – which would ban EU migrants who are in work from receiving benefits until they have been in employment in the UK for four years – and turn his attention to other measures to reduce the “pull factors” that attract EU migrants to the UK.

Government sources confirmed Cameron’s switch to a more flexible approach, saying that “what matters most is to fix the problems, not the precise form of the arrangements”.
