Sun forced to print front-page correction over Corbyn claim

Ipso made the ruling about the Sun’s Jeremy Corbyn front page that was published on 15 September.

Oh dear, how sad. Just when Rupert Murdoch is chumming up with David Cameron again, his biggest newsrag has been ordered to publish a front-page apology for misleading the public with a political story.

Bang goes any credibility the Dirty Digger might have had. It’ll be a blue Christmas (in more ways than one) for him.

And a merry Christmas for Labour.

The Sun has been forced to print a front-page correction over a claim that the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was willing to join the privy council because his party stood to benefit financially.

The press watchdog said the paper had made “significantly misleading” claims in its front-page story, published on 15 September and had only made an offer to correct them at the eleventh hour.

The Sun reported that Corbyn “will kiss the Queen’s hand on bended knee in a humiliating personal climbdown”. It said he had become a privy counsellor so he can “grab £6.2m” of state cash.

But, after a complaint from a former Labour party staff member, the Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso) said that there was not a formal connection beteen Corbyn’s position on the council and the allocation of funding for opposition parties – called Short money.

It said, therefore, that the story was inaccurate, in contravention of clause one of its editorial code.

Because the misleading information was “repeated throughout the article” and appeared on the front page, Ipso ordered that notice of the adjudication also appear on the front of the paper.

The item as reported on the BBC papers review, and to be fair to the BBC, in a very sympathetic airing that Corbyn has been lied about incessantly by this excuse for a paper and others, stated how much disdain the Sun had shown in the way it has retracted their lies. The regulatory body needs to punish the sun, it’s owner and editor, suitably, as the retraction is mocking the notion of fairness and the possibility these papers can behave fairly and not attempt to show how little respect they have. This should be a test for the regulatory sincerity of post Leveson newspapers! They’ve failed in their attempts to treat all equal, they now seem to want to suggest they have no right to controlled or questioned by any body.

We all wait with bated breath for this humble apology. Will it be on a special Christmas day edition?

Sun have been told to apologise but not when or in what format as far as I can tell. Sounds like a gentle tap on the knuckles which makes the whole episode another example of Murdoch’s insidious power play.

Apology – shamology. Bet it will the smallest type – hidden in ads!

It is the sole purpose of the Sun to damn and misrepresent whoever Murdoch dislikes in politics. That one man is allowed so much power and influence is a sad comment on our democracy, or what remains of it.

      Good question!
That’s what I get for letting an article go out using the headline under which the source material was published.
It seems The Sun merely published a headline (of its own) about the IPSO ruling, and pointed people to a story on an inside page. This was not what IPSO demanded, which was a correction with as much prominence as the original story.

The story is incorrect. The Independent corrected their version of the story

‘The Sun newspaper has asked us to point out that it was not instructed to “apologise” for its front-page story on Jeremy Corbyn by the Press watchdog Ipso, as we claimed on our own front page yesterday. In fact, the Committee of Ipso ‘required that a reference to the adjudication to be published on the front page, directing readers to the full adjudication.’

So, the Sun has done exactly what was required.

Actually, you should try reading the story.
      It is correct.
