David Cameron fails to guarantee social housing tenants will get new homes once they’re demolished

Last Updated: January 13, 2016By

This exchange would be hilarious if it wasn’t about turfing poor people out of their homes and failing to provide new accommodation for them.

David Cameron clearly lost this exchange – he didn’t have a single good answer.

This is the shape of Prime Minister’s Questions to come.

The Prime Minister has failed to guarantee social housing tenants would get new homes in their areas once they’re demolished.

The Tories’ new housing bill contains a string of measures which could drastically reduce the country’s stocks of social housing, which thousands rely on to keep a secure roof over their heads.

There are rule changes, sell-offs and pledges to bulldoze homes.

But at Prime Minister’s Questions this afternoon, Jeremy Corbyn warned the £140m promised to bulldoze sink estates was a ‘drop in the ocean’ that wouldn’t even cover the cost of the bulldozers.

He pointed out affordable homes will include houses to buy for £450,000, not just those to rent.

Yet the PM replied with a political jibe.

“I accept this isn’t as carefully thought through as his reshuffle,” he sniped. “I gather it’s still going on, it hasn’t actually finished yet.”

Mr Corbyn asked if poor families would be able to afford starter homes costing a staggering £450,000 in London.

“I very much hope they will,” Mr Cameron replied.

Mr Corbyn damned Cameron with statistics from Shelter.

They show people on the new ‘national living wage’ won’t be able to afford starter homes in 98% of council areas.

The Prime Minister replied with an attempt to paint himself as the saviour of the poor.

He said: “He owns his home. I own my home. Why can’t we let those 1.3million people live in their homes?”

It was pointed out on Twitter that Mr Cameron lives in 10 Downing Street, which he definitely doesn’t own.

Camoron is loosing the battle against Corbyn. Every time he resorts to personal attacks on Corbyn they make him seem more the arrogant bully that he is.

This government has been trying very hard for some time to create an economic dictatorship. Now they have just come up with a brainwave – demolish people’s homes, with no promise of providing new ones, under the pretext of eliminating “sink estates” to improve their lives. Just how stupid do they think the British public are?

It’s not “how stupid” – it’s “how helpless”.

“…..tenants will get new homes once they’re demolished”

    So, (as Cameron oft quotes), let me make this clear, tenants will get new homes, ONCE they’re demolished, so where do the tenants go whilst the bulldozing is taking place? (shades of Israel?}

Where and what are these homes which tenants will be moved to?

There could be hundreds, if not thousands of families being moved. To where?

Hypothesis – if for instance, 5,000 homes are demolished, where are the 5,000 homes ready and waiting for the tenants to be resettled in.

If there are 5,000 homes waiting for the evictees, why have they not been used to house the already homeless people?

I just can’t say any more – the mind just boggles…..
