Labour: Lords curbs ‘stifle debate’
It must be a joy to some commenters on This Blog, to see so much opposition from Labour.
All too often, This Writer sees comments claiming Labour never opposed anything done by the Coalition government. Such comments are drivel, of course.
At least we can all rest assured that such suggestions must now be well and truly buried in the past. The reaction to the Tory bid to gag the House of Lords is just one example of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition doing its job today – just check recent articles for some of the others.
Labour has accused the government of trying to “stifle debate” by removing peers’ power to veto some draft laws.
Shadow Lords leader Baroness Smith said the move was a “massive over-reaction” to the government’s defeat over tax credit changes last year.
She was speaking as peers debated the proposals put forward by Conservative Lord Strathclyde.
The Tory peer said Lords were actually being given a new “very practical” power they had never had before.

do Tories sit in a big room in Parliament reciting lies to one another that they expect everybody else to believe,because they keep coming out with the same crap about a
low welfare,high wages,low taxation economy when anybody questions their policies.
do they mean high wages and low taxation for them,and low welfare for anybody unfortunate enough to be sick,disabled or unemployed ?
In the interests of democracy let us hope the “Lords” will maintain their refusal to be gagged by an undemocratic process.
I agree there is need for a radical review of current powers of lords. however the disintegration of the tories is a higher priority currently. A vote of no confidence in the government would go a long way towards this objective.
If all opposition put this motion forward it would be a step towards this change.
there’s a need for a radical review of current powers of Government i. e. their plan to bulldoze 100 council estates when there’s a radical shortage of housing as it is.
where are people going to live while they’re doing this ?
