Rolling in it: Westminster Council can afford a Rolls-Royce but is axing childcare

Here’s a council that’s got its priorities right. Well, right-wing.

When ordinary people hear about this misuse of public funds, I wouldn’t give a farthing for these cars’ chances of remaining untarnished, undented and intact.

A Tory-run council is spending thousands of pounds running a fleet of luxury cars while pushing through cuts to children’s services.

Westminster council in London spent £90,000 on a Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph for the Mayor and other local bigwigs.

It has also splashed out nearly £30,000 in the last three years on leasing a top-of-the-range Audi for council use.

The council spent £11,800 last year on the upkeep, congestion charge fees and fuel costs for the two chauffeur-driven vehicles.

The details, released under a Freedom of Information request, came as the local authority is set to axe nearly 50 play workers and support staff as part of cuts to youth services.

The staff, who provide after school activities for hundreds of children, could lose their jobs under plans to save £320,000 over the next two years from the Children’s Centres, Youth Provision and Play Provision budgets.

Yes, it’s extravagant but remember, we’re all in this together!

Indeed we are. Some of us are in it right up to our necks, others get away scot free. No matter what, the wealthy and their representatives ride roughshod over us without a shred of conscience being disturbed.

Good to know a tory run council has got it’s priorities right. (NOT).

What can one say…..Employing chauffeurs with all their overheads would be equally expensive and one would think with the transport infrastructure of the metropolis one would want to emphasize them being in it together by using public transport. If they cannot see the benefits for the majority v looking after themselves and indulgent habit they are not fit for purpose ….like the rest of the Cons.

Are they deliberately trying to rub salt into the wounds or just plain incompetent? This is disgusting in times of such harsh austerity and is insulting to so many. This should be stopped in it’s tracks and not brushed under the carpet.

I remember being on a secondment to an engineering firm in Sheffield where the boss was standing workers off whilst buying a Roller for himself. The car had, apparently once belonged to the Queen, so that made it alright.

No doubt they’ll come up with some excuse to justify why it was necessary. I mean, don’t forget, Mayor’s do need the luxuries you know.

The only way to stop it is to get rid of these usurpers of public trust; although I guess there are many comfortably off “substitutes” who couldn’t care at all. We desperately need to get a proper accountable and democratic government back into power and I feel confident that Jeremy & co will make it as long as we all stick together and don’t fight over differences of opinion which will simply give the Tories an open cheque for more indulgencies at our expense.

Typical tory attitude, they look after themselves whilst the rest of the country especially the vulnerable are left homeless, starving, ill or without basic essential services. They MUST go

Get your facts right. The Westminster Rolls Royce was bought in about 1998 when the Seraph was actually a current model and it was about £190,000, not £90,000 and it’s now worth about £20,000.

Don’t make out like they just bought it. It was purchased in far more prosperous times!

If you’re upset about the headline, take it up with the Mirror.
The amount spent buying these cars, and on their upkeep, is indicative of Westminster Council’s priorities and is an indictment against that council.

there should be a taxpayers representative present in parliament to check on what OUR money is being spent on.

And also in local authorities, to monitor councils like Westminster?
