Nine humiliating Tory defeats you might have missed this week | The Canary

Last Updated: January 30, 2016By

The Conservative Government has a working majority of just 16 MPs.

Let’s remember that, next time we hear David Cameron talking about our country as if he owns it.

The Conservative government just had a hideous week, defeated at every turn by judges, courts, the House of Lords and devolved parliaments. Here are nine Tory defeats you might have missed:

1. Child poverty targets
2. The benefit cap for carers
3. The Google tax deal
4. The trade union bill
5. Court fees
6. “A bunch of migrants”
7. The bedroom tax
8. Employment and support allowance
9. Legal aid cuts

All of these defeats had one thing in common: they all involved attacks on society’s have-nots. This week, the Conservative government has tried to remove rights, resources or dignity from children growing up in poverty, carers, workers needing protection, refugees, rape victims, and sick and disabled people – for starters.

That, sadly, no longer seems extraordinary. What is extraordinary, though, is that other parts of Britain’s establishment – peers, devolved parliaments, senior judges and courts of law – are increasingly stepping in to hold the government to account over its legal, ethical and constitutional transgressions. If the trend continues, the Tories may find themselves facing a very difficult four years indeed.

CaMorons absolute majority is 16 but his working majority is mostly considerably higher as he can usually bank on the support of Douglas Carswell on most looney right policy and on the Ulster Unionists for most gingoistic policies especially if they disadvantage the catholic population.

Incidentally does anyone know how many times Corbyns much vaunted rebellions were on the winning side? I.e. how many times he was involved in defeating a Labour government motion.

Pity that it has taken 9 months for the shambles that this bunch of cowboys has created in the UK to come to the surface. I’m not sure that any of us, and the poor and vulnerable in particular, can endure another 4 years of their incompetence and cruelty.

Very nice to see, but under-reported in the mainstream media.

It is most encouraging that other sections of society are holding the government to account. There are quite a few people and organizations suing the government as well. Outstanding is the appalling massacre in Yemen and our obscene cosy relationship with the fake Saudi royals plus our enormous arms deals being used for war crimes spring to mind.
We need to keep up the heat and turn this around. There are quite a few scandals they are trying to hide which could erupt at any time and blow them away.
    Keep up the good work!

It’s taken long enough to start, hopefully the tide is turning!
