Ukip broadcast cleared after complaints of racism and Islamophobia

Last Updated: February 22, 2016By

Right! So. You can spout factual inaccuracies, racism and sectarianism, as long as it is “political speech, in which freedom of expression is very important”.

One wonders how the leaders of the BNP feel, learning this after their registration as a UK political party lapsed (or have they re-registered – not that anybody cares about the BNP)?

What would Ofcom do if anyone else had acted in the same way, in the context of “political speech”? Would we suddenly find our words redefined out from under us?

Ofcom has dismissed complaints that a Ukip party political broadcast was racist and Islamophobic – but admitted some viewers would have found it offensive.

The broadcasting regulator assessed 40 complaints about Ukip’s four-minute party political broadcast, which urged people to vote to exit the European Union because Turkey could join.

The PPB, which aired on ITV and the BBC in early February, highlighted Turkey’s Muslim population and claimed that up to 15 million Turkish citizens could migrate.

“Having considered several complaints about this UKIP party political broadcast, we won’t be taking the matter forward for investigation,” said a spokeswoman for Ofcom. “We found this broadcast was capable of causing offence but this was justified by its context as political speech, in which freedom of expression is very important.”

In some ways Farage is telling the truth. Turkey is bombing and murdering the PKKTurkish Kurds) in it’s own country and has invaded Syrian territory to murder the YPG(Syrian Kurds). The reason Turkey took in so many Syrian refugees was to gain leverage within Europe with the threat of sending the refugees to Europe if we didn’t play his game. I certainly think that Turkey, under Dovatugli and Erdogan are a terrorist regime in league with IS(as was demonstrated with the two flags of Turkey and IS one atop the other on a flagpole, which Facebook tried to censor taken in Syria where Turkish troops are working in concert with DAESH to slaughter the Kurds). As such I do not want Turkey in NATO, but then NATO has become the US military wing in the EU. Turkey takes millions of dollars in EU funds to give “safe haven” to refugees who live in apalling conditions, in effect the EU is paying Turkey to stop the refugees from flooding into Europe. Personally, if the US and EU axis would allow the war to come to an end with the elimination of IS, the refugee crisis, at least as far as the Syrians are concerned, would cease to be a problem. The Libyans will be next to flood EUrope because of BritishUS bombing. Farage would have done better if he had been honest about the situation instead of misrepresenting it for his own ends and actually promoted what Corbyn had asked for, rather than scaremongering tactics on the refugee crisis. The answer was always what Corbyn had stated from the start of the bombing question, to end the war which the US instigated and fund the refugee camps across the whole of the EU, until they could go home. Many of the fleeing IS/DAESH militants are returning to their country of origin, Serbia, Chechnya, Ukraine etc. A minority of Syrian refugees will be trying to encourage fundamentalism, leave that to the Imams to deal with, they know best how. Stop the likes of Pegida, BNP and Islamaphobists from inciting racial/ religious hatred and give the fundamentalist no traction and we will have nothing to fear from Islamist refugees. Je ne suis pas Charlie Hebdo.
