Project Fear rears its head in the Trident row – but has Fallon misjudged Scotland?

It should be no surprise that Michael Fallon doesn’t want to lose his nastiest toy.

Having lost traction with the public by using the “deterrent” argument for keeping Trident, he is now claiming the loss of Trident would harm Scottish jobs – even though Scottish Labour has already said workers should transfer to new defence initiatives.

This is just another aspect of Project Fear. Scottish workers are being told their jobs are at risk, but the claim is not true – or will only come true if this very defence secretary decides to launch his own vindictive attack on them.

The UK defence secretary has said Labour’s divisions over the renewal of Trident could endanger thousands of Scottish jobs.

Michael Fallon told the BBC that a decision to scrap the nuclear missile system could jeopardise millions of pounds of investment in Scotland.

Scottish Labour accused the defence secretary of “aggresive politics”.

MPs are expected to vote this year on whether to back government plans to renew the UK’s four Trident submarines.

I think most of the people in Scotland will not be taken in by the crap this scumbag comes out with. It is well known that very few of the jobs associated with Trident are actually in Scotland. Much as I sympathise with jobs that may be lost in England, I hate the way he aims his lies at Scotland. We take the risks of the weapons on our doorstep while England takes the vast majority of the investment involved.

Going ahead with such massive spending, without a Commons vote, would have been unthinkable a few decades ago but now seems par for the Tory course. Personally, I think there should be a UK-wide referendum on the issue, with a secondary vote of whether, if you vote to renew, you would like the subs & missiles 30 mins from your home.

All this coming from a hypocrite who says that nuclear weapons make North Korea a target but keep us safe.

the world has moved on so that underwater drones are now reportedly a real threat to stop the missiles being fired.
dont think anyone wants the missiles located in close proximity to their community. Now is surely the time for cessation of all nuclear missiles.

Michael Fallon for me, is always one of those front benchers, that whenever McDonnell or Corbyn are doing a speech in the HoC, he’s looking at them with a frown on his face, as if to say “wtf are you talking about?” I find it really funny.
Aside from that, Jeremy Corbyn has always stated that if the decision is made NOT to renew Trident, his first priority would be to PROTECT all the workers that would ‘lose’ their jobs.
