Just when you think the state of politics in the UK is appalling, we can always count on the USA to go a step further. Ted Cruz – what a piece of work.

It’s almost enough to make one sympathise with Donald Trump. But not quite.

The allegation is even more ridiculous than the UK Independence Party’s claim that the EU free movement rule within the ‘Schengen’ zone is what prompted the terror attack in Brussels.

Appearing on Fox News after the attack in Brussels, presidential candidate Ted Cruz blamed Donald Trump’s stand on NATO for the tragic terror event.

“It is striking,” Cruz said, “on the day after Donald Trump called for America weakening NATO, withdrawing from NATO we see Brussels, where NATO is headquartered, the subject of a radical Islamic terrorist attack.”

The Texas Senator said abandoning NATO will “hand Putin a major victory” and also “hand ISIS a major victory.”

Trump said the United States can no longer afford NATO.

“NATO is costing us a fortune, and yes, we’re protecting Europe with NATO, but we’re spending a lot of money,” he argued.

You’d think that he or his advisers would at least think of something more credible behind blaming Trump – like the way his hate speech increases the risk of radicalisation. Now THAT I could swallow as a general point, but not in relation to a single terrorist attack at a particular place and time.
