Tory climbdown over junior doctors’ contract imposition

The Conservatives have U-turned on their plan to impose a draconian and sexist new contract on junior doctors – days after announcing that they couldn’t stop the process because it was already too far advanced.

It seems they were being economical with the truth. Who’d have thought it of them?

The Daily Mirror had the story:

Jeremy Hunt has blinked first in the bitter junior doctors’ dispute and agreed to pause introducing the controversial new contracts.

And he sneaked it out while everyone was queueing up to vote… in the House of Lords of all places.

The Health Secretary announced he was willing to delay introducing the contracts for five days to allow further talks.

Earlier the Department of Health had rejected a compromise deal aimed at breaking the deadlock put forward by medical colleges.

But in a surprise climbdown, Health Minister Lord Prior told peers they were ready to suspend the introduction of the contracts.

He said Mr Hunt would be writing to the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges later this morning to explain “we are willing to pause introduction of the new contract for five days from Monday should the junior doctors committee agree to focus discussion on the outstanding contractual issues – namely unsocial hours and Saturday pay”.

5 days. How generous. Not quite the climbdown I was anticipating from the headier. Still, maybe something will come of it. I’m just off to re-watch Bercow sticking it to the smarmy git. A daily viewing must.

This only shows what a completely incompetent clown CHunt is and how he’s handle this situation, which has been badly, glad to see him humiliated even more, hope something does come out of this debacle!
