John Whittingdale has forged a singularly unimpressive cabinet-ministerial career so far.

The energy he has devoted to his efforts to ‘reform’ the BBC into the ground would have been better-spent reforming his own personal life.

In particular, he should have known to keep his mouth shut about secret government matters, rather than blabbing them out during ‘pillow talk’ with one of his paramours (about which nothing seems to have happened).

Now he has another chance to make the right decision.

What are the odds that he won’t?

A cross-party group of MPs has written to the Culture Secretary calling for a reduction in betting amounts to protect ‘the young and vulnerable’.

The new All Party group on fixed odds betting machines (FOBTs) has been set up to investigate the effects of the machines – dubbed the ‘crack cocaine’ of gambling .

And after their first meeting this week, they have pledged to make sure the public knows the truth about the terrible toll the machines take on gamblers.

They have already written to Culture Secretary John Whittingdale outlining their concerns.

In the letter, signed by members of all parties, they ask for a reduction in bets on FOBTs to £2.
