The tactics of hate

Last Updated: June 17, 2016By

Being good followers of politics, you’ll all have seen this poster, unveiled by Nigel Farage yesterday:

160617 Farage poster

Some of you may also have seen the images to which it bears a terrifying resemblance – images from a Nazi propaganda film inciting hatred against immigrants into Germany in the 1930s:

160617 Nazi poster

These are the tactics of hate.

And those of us who ignore history will see it repeated.

It is welcome news that Mr Farage’s poster has been reported to the police for inciting racial hatred and breaching UK race laws.

It is this kind of imagery that encourages people to believe our membership of the EU means migrants have free access into the UK (they don’t; we have border controls), and that anyone who supports our membership of the EU is a traitor.

It is this kind of thinking that led to the killing of Jo Cox.

Sadly, our laws do not seem able to place the blame where it belongs.

Does anybody believe Farage will receive any kind of punishment for this hate-mongering?

An anti-migrant poster unveiled by Nigel Farage has been reported to the police with a complaint that it incites racial hatred and breaches UK race laws. On Thursday night Dave Prentis, of the Unison union, said he had written to the Metropolitan police about the poster, which shows a queue of mostly non-white migrants and refugees with the slogan “Breaking point: the EU has failed us all.”

Prentis described the Ukip poster as a “blatant attempt to incite racial hatred”. He said: “This is scaremongering in its most extreme and vile form. Leave campaigners have descended into the gutter with their latest attempt to frighten working people into voting to leave the EU.

“To pretend that migration to the UK is only about people who are not white is to peddle the racism that has no place in a modern, caring society. That’s why Unison has complained about this blatant attempt to incite racial hatred and breach UK race laws.”

I am pleased to learn that Farage’s offensive and disgraceful propaganda poster has been reported to the Police. Without a shadow of doubt it is racist in the extreme and specifically and deliberately designed to cause animosity and hatred towards people from other cultures. It is a shame that a great many people do not recognise Farage and UKIP for the racist bigots they are.

It is a shame that lefties don’t understand the REAL meaning of the word democracy which means ALL political issues and immigration IS an issue should be discussed freely and without fearing that those who wish to discuss it could be possibly arrested by the police for contravening our Orwellian race laws which have no democratic mandate whatsoever. It is precisely because issues such as immigration have been swept under the carpet by Establishment politicians that tragedies like what happened on the 16th June can happen.

If anyone is being vile here it is undemocratic COMMUNIST wretches like Mr Prentis. It’s time people like him stopped causing constant trouble in this country.

How interesting that you write in support of Nazi imagery and call the man who spoke up against it an undemocratic Communist. How democratic were the Nazis? Ask the Poles, the Czechs, the Austrians, the French, the Romanies and the Jews. How Communist is Mr Prentis? I’m willing to bet you’re the last person with an informed opinion.

Reading between the lines, you seem to be saying you are a racist and a fascist. Are you sure you want to do that? There’s nothing undemocratic about the Public Order Act. And there’s nothing wrong with discussing immigration as an issue, as long as you stick to the real elements of that discussion. You seem to be suggesting you want to talk about race, rather than immigration, though. Your derogatory use of the term “lefties” and “Establishment”, together with your belief that people could be arrested for discussing immigration “freely”, suggest that your own political leaning is much further to the right wing.

I’m old enough to remember the Saatchi and Saatchi ‘Labour Isn’t Working” poster campaign that helped elect Thatcher which was remarkably identical but not, in that case, aimed at fostering hatred against the people in the image who, it turned out, were employees of the advertising company and Tory central office, I believe, and the image was computer enhanced to show a relatively small number of people a lot of times to create a false image (lie).

It’s clearly a powerful image for right wing despots to use to try to cause fear in the minds of ordinary people.

Where is the evidence that Jo was murdered because of what you and the media allege?

I have heard a number of conflicting eye witness reports…..

I therefore believe any verdect regarding the motive or intent is yet to be established let alone proven…..

We have a justice system in place which is called trial by jury?

I have Never heard Nigel Farage speak in a racist way toward the immigration crisis….. although inferences are often made in an attempt to discredit his and many peoples point of view. Politics of Hate in reverse?

I used to believe the propaganda toward Nigel but in more recent times, having examined his critique, I personally do not believe his intentions toward immigrants are anything other than concern for many working class areas who find themselves struggling with public services, finding a job etc….

Having said that, I fully understand that there is a minority of people within this country, who are racist with racist intentions, but most of the concerns are economic, whether rational or otherwise, they are for the vast majority not Racist…….

I am not against immigrants, my family come from Greece, I welcome them here, but also understand why many people think we need to have a better system, I would prefer a points system personally…..as in Australia….

I can see the resemblance of the posters you show above, but to be honest if you had not pointed it out, I would be none the wiser………as to intent to insight racial hatred…..????!!!!!! the thought never occurred to me? nor does it now, having read your blog……..

I think more evidence has become available since I wrote my piece. Proof is what our courts are for, although that doesn’t mean we may not discuss the evidence if legal requirements are met.

Your opinion of Farage is difficult to support, having seen him standing in front of a poster that is a direct copy of Nazi imagery, in which I understand not one human face is of white/European origin.

Regarding his concerns over immigration, have you not heard the argument that we need migrant workers from abroad to provide the economic activity that will support our unusually large older population in the immediate future, and that they are supporting our public services?

As for the resemblance in the posters going unnoticed if I hadn’t pointed out, are you familiar with the saying that those who do not learn from history may be doomed to repeat its mistakes? Sites like this are here to make sure people have the information they need to make an informed decision.

If people choose to ignore that information, well, that’s their choice – but we’ll all have to live with the consequences.

Mike, re Linda, there’s none so blind as they who will not see. (Not sure of the origin of that). There’s plenty of evidence that Jo Cox’s [alleged] murderer acted as he [allegedly] did from political motives. He is a supporter of white supremacy and clearly violently opposed to democracy preferring violence to reasoned debate (qed).

That Farage is a racist can, in my opinion be deduced from his many utterances about the numbers of immigrants coming here and the ‘threat’ to ‘our way of life’. UKIP has been Project Fear from the outset and it is no coincidence that so many of its members found their way there via the English Defence League, British National Party and all the other far right neo fascists.

Had Linda been canvassing in recent times she, like me, would have met people who said that they were supporting UKIP to ‘stop the scum’, ‘make Britain white again’ and many other often even more unpleasant comments.Given Linda’s Greek heritage she should be able to understand the term xenophobia and recognise it when she sees it. Sadly most xenophobes do not seem to recognise this in themselves often prefacing their comments with ‘I’m not racist, but….’

I seriously doubt Linda has read Farage’s ‘critique’ he doesn’t have one. She may have read his utterances in which case she will have seen that he often makes statements one day only to retract or modify them the next when confronted with incontrovertible evidence that he was wrong. Otherwise he makes up ‘statistics’ as he goes along loudly proclaiming ‘Fact’ each time as though this makes them true while denying the true statistics.

The exit campaign use this as their goto stance, every expert opinion from the IMF, the IFS, the 10 Nobel prize winning economists through to the trade unions etc who have warned that leave would wreck the British economy and destroy jobs are wrong. Every international company that is based here because we provide access to the single market that has said they would be forced to move operations to the continent are ‘lying’.

The only economist of note that is backing leave is Patrick Minford. His track record is that he was the economic brains behind Thatcherism, he hates the unions and the left and it was under his guidance that the Tories in the eighties attacked Britain’s manufacturing base and heavy industry with the deliberate aim of moving to a service economy resulting in us getting kicked out of the ERM. He is also the man who coined the term ‘underclass’ referring to the unemployed, dismissing them as a group to poverty and disregard.

Okay, I’ve inserted that wonderful word “allegedly” into your comments about the man accused of killing Jo Cox, because here in the UK we have a rule that people accused of crimes are innocent until proven guilty. It may seem bizarre under circumstances such as these, but it’s the law.

Nigel Farage said this on the BBC’s Sunday Politics:

“Sadly we have a couple of organisations out there headed up by senior Labour Party figures, who purport to be against fascism and extremism, who receive funding from the Department of Communities, who receive funding from the trade unions, who have acted in a violent way more than once.”

You and I both know he was talking about you, me, and everyone who is part of HOPE not hate.

    • Mike Sivier June 20, 2016 at 9:14 pm - Reply

      Then he was lying.
