Hilton’s immigration claims are hogwash

Steve Hilton, the PM’s former strategy guru, has become a thorn in his side during the EU referendum campaign [Image: Stefan Rousseau/PA].

Two arguments against Steve Hilton’s claim (below) present themselves:

The first is that immigration provides a net boost to the UK economy that means we profit from EU membership by more than £6 billion per year.

The second is that immigration will remain high, whether the UK is in the EU or out of it, because more than 150,000 foreign citizens come here every year – as students.

Their financial contribution is vital to our universities – is Mr Hilton seriously suggesting that we should cut off that income stream? I don’t think so.

Therefore we may deduce that Mr Hilton’s claim, that David Cameron was told his immigration target could not be met from within the EU, is hogwash.

David Cameron’s former strategy guru has claimed that officials told the prime minister four years ago that it would be impossible to meet his immigration target from within the EU. Steve Hilton, who is now campaigning for Brexit alongside Boris Johnson, said Whitehall officials told the prime minister “directly and explicitly” that the pledge to bring down net migration to tens of thousands would fail.
