These words by children’s author Michael Rosen were never more timely

160621 Michael Rosen on Fascism

Isn’t this exactly what we’re seeing in the UK – right now – as a by-product of the EU referendum campaign?

“Fascism arrives as your friend.” That’s exactly how UKIP, and representatives of even more extreme organisations, have portrayed themselves.

They say they represent the working people of the country; the real people who have lived here for generations and shaped the society in which we all live.

They say it has taken a wrong turn, and you need to stand up and protect your own from the outsider; the interloper; the unwanted guest who is trying to change our way of life.

They lie through their teeth in the hope that you think they’re smiling.

Professor Michael Rosen is, a British children’s novelist and poet, author of 140 books, and former Children’s Laureate.

The people to whom he is referring would persecute him because he is Jewish.

Most of these fascist/nazi types (I won’t call them pigs, as it is an insult to porcines all over the world) are usually either losers who can’t be arsed to improve their lot or too mentally challenged to change their circumstances or they are mean minded and/or vicious nobodies who must find a scapegoat to blame for their own inadequacies. They are saddos much like those who beat their wives, knock their kids around or enjoy causing harm to animals(the ones who can’t fight back) to be pitied if not for their malice and malevolent nature. There’s are special places for them – you can scrape the barrel, turn stones over or look in the gutter and you will find them.

I particularly enjoyed the Clement Attlee quotation, as yesterday I had ‘Leave’ supporters claiming they were like him. Seriously!
This one: “I could not consent to the introduction into our national life of a device so alien to all our traditions as the referendum, which has only too often been the instrument of Nazism and fascism.” – Clement Attlee
