The operative part of this article is Professor Michael Dougan’s expert assurance that the UK has not lost any sovereignty to the European Union.

Ever.

It is the EU that has no sovereignty over anything.

So if you hear anyone suggesting otherwise, they are lying. Please do not vote in support of liars.

Referring to what he calls the Leave campaign’s “myths”, Prof Dougan said: “For someone who works in the field like I do, It’s probably the equivalent of an evolutionary biologist listening to a bunch of creationists tell the public that creation theory is right and evolution is completely wrong – it really is that bad for someone who actually is a professional researcher in the field. And yet it is working.”

In the video, Prof Dougan asserts that the UK has not ceded any sovereignty to Brussels. He says: “There is no doubt whatsoever that the United Kingdom is a sovereign state under international law. There is no doubt whatsoever that the Parliament in Westminster is the supreme lawmaking authority in this country. Conversely, there is no doubt whatsoever that the EU is not a sovereign entity.

“It has only those powers which it’s been given under the EU treaties. And if the UK courts sometimes give priority to EU law in the event of a conflict with domestic law, it’s purely because our Parliament has expressly instructed them to do so in our own legislation.”

He explained: “It’s very basic EU and constitutional law, and it’s amazing the national debate has been so distorted in the way that is has.”

The Leave campaign relies on simple narratives, reinforced by a biased and compliant press. After all, when watching the debate on BBC last night, I lost count of the number of times I heard one of the Leave debaters say “take back control”. It must have been an agreed strapline or something!

Sadly, political debate in the UK has been dumbed down so much in recent years that simple, repeatable narratives carry more weight than factual debate. People can readily accept the idea that the EU consists of unelected bureaucrats hell-bent on inflicting crazy rules on us for the sake of it, because that’s what they read in the papers (even though they have no evidence of this in their own lives), and explaining why that is wrong takes too long and is too nuanced for them to easily accept.

It seems to me that the truth and the real facts are being lost by the loud screaming lies being told by the leave campaign. Even when the lies are pointed out to them, they continue to shout them loudly from the roof tops.
