New Prime Minister – same old inept Tories.

Faced with a commuter crisis created by their own privatisation policies, the Conservatives brought complacency to a new pinnacle by failing to even bother commenting on it – after a newspaper offered a whole page of space for that purpose.

Labour has demanded that the government take action, up to and including reassuming outright control and renationalising Southern Rail.

But even after the roasting they received in the Argus, the most the Tories could manage was a weak attempt to pass the blame on to the people who make Southern Rail work in any way at all – striking employees. Pathetic drivel.

Even Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has had a go.

Writing in Tory-supporting newspaper the Telegraph, he commented: “Some of you might not think I have much to be grateful for these days – but there’s one thing I thank my lucky stars for every morning: I don’t have to travel on Southern Rail.

“If there is one example of how the intransigent ideology of this government outweighs the public’s, it’s Southern Rail.”

A local newspaper has skewered transport secretary Chris Grayling over his failure to condemn the performance of Southern Rail.

In just six short paragraphs The Argus, a newspaper circulating in the Brighton & Hove area, highlighted the lack of response from the government over the controversy.

As of Monday, commuters who travel along Southern Rail routes are facing a five day strike. This has come on top of huge rises in the number of delays, staff walkouts, and frequent cancellations. Many commentators have called on the government to intervene, and take over operation of the franchise.

On page 3 of Saturday’s edition of The Argus, the paper published a short message in which it apologised to its readers. It left the rest of the page blank.

Just as long as they and their chums can make money out of it the nasty Tories couldn’t give a fig about the public generally.
