Latest Owen Smith sexism involves his wife (she must be so proud)

Owen Smith seems to think having “fought off hundreds of lads” to “pull” his wife – 30 years ago – makes him a leader.

Most of the social media seems to think it makes him a sexist.

Perhaps Mrs Smith won’t mind, but his attitude suggests he thinks of her as a trophy bride – objectivising her rather than considering her as a human being.

Would would JK Rowling think of that?

His language also implies violence, of course.

Of course, the wags on Twitter (and elsewhere) have been having great fun with this. One such example is the image at the top of this article.

There are far too many to quote in this article (go here instead), but I also liked this one:

“I really can’t believe hundreds of lads found Owen Smith attractive. Maybe it’s the glasses.”

It was 30 years ago this month. Sinitta was in the charts and a new drama called Casualty was starting on the telly.

In Barry, South Wales, a young Owen Smith– the man who [wishes he] would be next Labour leader – was beginning his A-levels.

There were 1,200 boys and just three girls in the entire school.

Today, sitting with us in the cosy cafe where we meet near Pontypridd, is one of those few girls, now Mrs Smith.

“Yes,” laughs Owen, “1,200 boys, three girls and I pulled Liz. So I must have something going on. That must be leadership.”

Yes – that’s pretty much the same as the joke I used at the end.

Look, I’m no fan of his, but the “quote” in the headline isn’t actually his own words. You even gave the real quote yourself!

“Yes,” laughs Owen, “1,200 boys, three girls and I pulled Liz. So I must have something going on. That must be leadership.”

Still cringe-worthy, but not as ridiculous or violent as this article suggests. Don’t fall for confirmation bias, or it makes you not much better than the main stream media. Consider how we’d be reacting if this was Corbyn being misquoted…

Perhaps Mr Smith would like to take issue with the Mirror over the implied violence in the headline?
If not, then we must draw our own conclusions. It’s not confirmation bias; it’s there in black and white.

Wow! Did he really just call her his follower rather than his partner. Not good…

It is kind of sad that the Labour party hasn’t got better candidates for its leadership than Smith and Corbyn.

Boasting about one from a choice of three really makes this mans life experience one to be envied. Maybe it was the right thing, who knows, but knowing what we do in other fields of this man, he sounds like a looser prepared to grab at the first opportunity.

Maybe it was because most of the boys were a, to young for her to be interested in, b, not in the same class’ c, not interested in her, seems the idea that all 1200 would either fancy her or she be interested in only works in Smiths head but not in reality.

Why is Owen Smith never seen at all these dinners he goes to? Always the single man?

      I don’t understand.

Smith’s behaviour gets more bizarre each day! I can not believe his ‘campaign’ is being overseen by anybody on the Labour Right. Mandelson must be as amazed at his gauche performances as the rest of us are. Smith appears to be a Gobby loose cannon careering around the deck firing cannonballs in every direction except at the real enemies – the Tories

I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but he had a distinct look off fear in his eyes during his Corbyn question-time debate. Shame the handshake did not appear reciprocated, not surprised.

Reading the article in the mirror make me think that even Mr Corbyn at the hustings is taking the mikey out of Mr Smith when he says that he could do with his knowledge. Ha!ha!ha! hahahahaha!

I wonder if he took his wife to Murdoch’s garden party?
