Nick Clegg says government has ‘no clue’ over Brexit – and he’s right, for once

This is the most sensible thing Nick Clegg has said in six years.

Shame his party supports another referendum on the EU – different to that proposed by Owen Smith, just to make matters more confusing.

Leaving the EU’s single market as part of any Brexit deal would do “untold damage” to the UK economy, Nick Clegg has told the Lib Dem conference.

The former deputy prime minister, who is now the party’s EU spokesman, said the single market was a UK creation that was vital for jobs and prosperity.

The Tories, he said, were “up a Brexit creek without a paddle, a canoe or a map – they have absolutely no clue”.

The government has insisted it will secure a “positive outcome” on trade.

The Lib Dems, who campaigned to stay in the EU, are pushing for a referendum on the terms of a final Brexit deal.

However, former Lib Dem business secretary Vince Cable said the party “must accept” the referendum result and stop focusing on a second vote.

So Clegg, I worked for the eu and want to ensure my pension from them, says something and we are supposed to be bothered by what he says, the truth is we have always had a negative trade balance with the eu nations, and there is only Germany worth trading with out of the whole eu, so the single market, which you don’t have to be a member of the eu to access anyway under wTO regulations isn’t actually that important to our economy.

The fact that Leave voters were permitted to engage in whatever Brexit scenario suited their fantasies is sufficient to justify a second referendum when the government eventually gets round to formulating concrete terms of exit.
