Increase health professionals by a quarter? Jeremy Hunt needs to learn England is not la-la land

The image says it all.

Jeremy Hunt – and Andrew Lansley before him – has been inexorably worsening conditions for people working in the English National Health Service.

But now he thinks he’ll recruit an extra 25 per cent of medical students into the nightmare he has created.

It simply isn’t going to happen.

Anyone who is seriously considering a career in medicine will look at what he is offering, dismiss it as fodder for fools and look abroad for a better opportunity.

After all, foreign training methods can’t be that bad:

The NHS has been recruiting foreign doctors for years.

The number of medical school places will increase by 25% from 2018 under plans to make England “self-sufficient” in training doctors.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is to announce an expansion in training places from 6,000 to 7,500 a year.

He believes increasing the number of home-grown doctors will be essential given the ageing population.

There is also concern it will become more difficult to recruit doctors trained abroad in the future.

About a quarter of the medical workforce is trained outside the UK, but the impact of Brexit and a global shortage of doctors could make it harder to recruit so many in the future.

Hunt, or should that begin with a C! Is only talking about training extra doctors because the tories are facing JC in the next GE, they do see him as a threat!

Just a little Englander mentality that characterises the Tories. We need input from other countries into such professions a medicine but a thicky like Hunt can’t understand this.

drop in the ocean and will take years to train if they want the debt baggage at the end of their training. Feels more like a very long term sound bite for grow our own with a touch of reducing dependance on other countries for our medical skills support.. Would have been nice if he also did something similar to the Nursing profession reintroducing their financial support as an encouragement.
