Fox snubbed as he seeks support for pre-Brexit trade deal

Liam Fox hopes to secure a pre-Brexit deal on the country’s future trading status with the EU. Fat chance! [Image: Reuters].

We’re seeing a clash between two cultures here – privilege and procedure.

Liam Fox comes from the privileged Conservative Party and thinks he is entitled to anything he wants, whenever he wants it.

But MEPs in the European Union could not care less about what he thinks. They have procedures to follow; they have rules.

And they’re not going to break the rules for a fat British toff.

Not unless he actually unbends and offers them something useful in return, I’m sure.

Liam Fox’s hopes of securing a trade deal with the European Union before Brexit have been dealt a blow by a leading member of the European parliament, who insists no deal can be struck until the UK has left the bloc.

Danuta Hübner, a former Polish minister who became the country’s first European commissioner, said it would not be possible for the UK to conclude a trade deal while still an EU member.

Now an MEP, she chairs the European parliament’s constitutional affairs committee, which will be responsible for vetting any post-Brexit free-trade agreement with the UK.
She stressed negotiations on Britain’s EU exit under article 50, due to begin next year, would be on a different track to talks on the future relationship.

This is exactly why we need to remain in the EU. It is, in my opinion, only the rules of membership of the EU that have retained a smattering of humanity in the UK today. God forbid that we do leave and be subjected to the whims of the likes of Fox et al.

The petition site 38 degrees got some people together with Liam Fox requesting that any trade deals be open and transparent. They came away feeling much better after having a chat with him. My MP is Stewart Jackson and I’m supposed to ask him, in a meeting with like minded individuals, to agree.
Stewart Jackson would say anything he thought we all wanted to hear and laugh at us after we left, no matter how many signatures we put in front of him. If Frauline May wants secret deals, he’d go along with it and to hell with his constituents – just like Liam Fox.
