Bid to curb Lords’ powers is abandoned by Tories – who need their help over Article 50

This is yet another U-turn from the weakest prime minister in recent UK history.

Theresa May knows she needs the Lords on-side if she is to get her controversial non-plans (she doesn’t actually have any at present) for exiting the European Union through Parliament.

So a Tory bid to stop peers blocking statutory instruments – legislation that changes the law using an existing Act of Parliament rather than passing a new one – must be sacrificed.

Conservatives are the Party of Expediency, not Principle.

They do what they think is necessary to get their own way.

They never act for the good of the country.

Theresa May has backed out of a fight to curb the power of the House of Lords in an attempt to calm its anger over Brexit.

A plan to strip peers of their right to veto certain laws – called statutory instruments – has been dropped

The idea was put forward last year, as David Cameron and George Osborne raged against the Lords for defeating the Government over steep cuts to tax credits for the low-paid.

The Prime Minister knows the toughest opposition to the triggering of the Article 50 notice to leave the EU will come in the Lords, where peers were heavily pro-Remain.

That opposition will only grow next year, when Parliament moves onto debating the exhaustive Great Repeal Bill, to eventually remove EU laws from the statute book.

Oh dear…..I have to say, and never thought I would ever admit it, the Lords seem to have far more grasp and common sense as to what the hell is going on in this Country and exactly what is needed. The Commons lemming mentality to everything is deeply disappointing….if these same people were in a Commercial environment they would have been shown the door years ago.

Tories will sacrifice anything or anyone just to keep their nasty political party alive, including the future of the nation. Quite recently I read somewhere that, with the demise of the “baby boomers” the Tory vote is gradually reducing year on year. I don’t know whether that is a fact, but it may explain why they resort to fraud and gerrymandering in their efforts to remain afloat.
