Brexiters’ ‘rude awakening’ on immigration was always going to happen

Particularly noteworthy is his comment that a significant reduction in immigration may be neither achievable nor desirable.
It’s an admission that arguments about too many people coming here from abroad were simply scaremongering. It has long been known that the UK currently needs a certain amount of immigration to prop up the economy in various ways, for example.
And it is an admission that moving out of the European Union was never likely to stop immigrants from coming in. That is not the way the system works. Again, it seems ‘Leave’ voters were sold a pup.
That’s what happens when politicians deliberately fail to have an adult discussion about the implications of leaving the EU or staying in – and when they hold a referendum with no plan ready if the vote is to leave.
People who backed Brexit in the belief it would lead to a cut in immigration into the UK were voting for something that is in effect impossible, a former member of David Cameron’s cabinet has said.
Stephen Crabb, a former work and pension secretary, said that Theresa May urgently needed to outline a new set of values for a post-Brexit immigration system, or the public may face a rude awakening.
“The problem is that, set against the popular expectation that Brexit means cutting immigration, there is nothing on the horizon to suggest that achieving any significant reduction is achievable or even desirable.”

Theresa May is surrounded by sycophants who only tell her what she wants to hear. Bit like the “echo chamber” which FB members are accused of living in.
I would also suggest Roy that she is surrounded by the ultra-right wing nasties such as Davis, Fox, Duncan-Smith (those who Major labelled “Bastards”), and if she doesn’t jump to their bidding she will be quickly ousted. The Nasty Party is so nasty it is willing to see the nation go over the edge of a cliff just as long as it gets its own narrow and nasty way.
