George Osborne defends taking multiple paid jobs ‘trading on his contacts book’ while still an MP

Last Updated: February 4, 2017By

Former chancellor George Osborne has accepted a six-figure sum to work as a part-time adviser to BlackRock [Image: Jack Taylor/Getty Images].

Oh, well that’s all right then. He’s making a contribution to public life by taking £600,000 in speaking fees and accepting a new six-figure job as part-time adviser to the world’s biggest fund manager.

And there’s nothing dodgy at all about the fact that Osborne had five meetings with representatives of Blackrock while he was Chancellor of the Exchequer and his pension reforms provided a huge opportunity for the company to profit.

If you’ll believe that, perhaps you’d like to come round and sample some lovely flying-pig bacon I’ve recently bought – it’ll be as kosher as Mr Osborne’s claims.

Asked whether his paid work outside the House of Commons, including BlackRock, represents a conflict of interest, he said: “I was chancellor of the exchequer working seven days a week, and now I’m a backbench MP I made a decision to remain in politics and public life because I wanted to go on contributing to the discussion about helping to improve our country.

“This week is not a bad snapshot of my life. On Monday, I was in New York accepting a Kissinger fellowship at the McCain Institute, then on Wednesday I was speaking in the House of Commons about Europe and here I am with my colleagues promoting the north of England and later you can come and join me in Knutsford in my constituency. That seems to me a pretty varied and interesting way to spend my time and hopefully make a contribution to our national life through things like the Northern Powerhouse Partnership.”

Were all in it together it’s just that some are more into the trough than others apparently, in fact so far in that most are kept out.

Anything that lure this monster away from politics is fine with me. Hopefully he might end up offered enough inducement to leave politics sooner rather than later and take his vicious and corrupting stink with him. Vile creature.

I guess it’s a very lucrative form of covert payback back scratching. However the plebs will never be privy to the secrets of the original first scratching exercise usually over a long lunch at some “gentlemens” club.

Corruption and fraud always seemed to pervade the area immediately surrounding Osborne.
