End to Joy: MPs are told to stop singing EU anthem at vote on triggering Brexit

SNP MP Patricia Gibson conducts her colleagues in the singalong.

The EU anthem is the ‘Ode to Joy’ from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. It is bitterly amusing that MPs should be scolded for singing it now because, after Brexit is triggered, there will be precious little joy in Parliament or anywhere else in the UK.

Anti-Brexit MPs have been told off for singing the EU’s anthem in an apparent protest as the House of Commons voted to trigger Article 50.

Members of the SNP were scolded for humming and whistling the homage to Brussels as Britain set its course for departure.

Some 494 MPs tonight backed the Prime Minister’s ‘Article 50 Bill’, which will give her permission to begin Britain’s two-year exit from the EU.

But all 54 Westminster members of the SNP opposed the law.

They argued Scotland voted by a majority for Remain and the Scottish Parliament was being denied a formal say in the negotiations.

I must make sure I hum/sing the tune in public as much as possible.

The final movement of Bethoven’s 9th (choral) Symphony used to be my favourite piece of music before it was usurped but he corruption ridden democratically deficient eu, maybe once we leave I can go back to playing it again without feeling angry, Just another bonus of leaving. Scotland had a chance to leave the UK and the eu simultaneously and voted against it, but Scotland is not a member the eu in its own right, and as it has a population less than that of London why should a part of the UK think it can have a veto of a majority decided decision?
