Sweden refugee nonsense: It’s time to take the TV remotes away from Donald Trump

Last Updated: February 19, 2017By

Donald Trump speaking at the rally in Melbourne, Florida, where he invented a non-existent refugee incident in Sweden.

Does anybody remember an old Billy Connolly routine about former US President Ronald Reagan, in which the comedian said, “This is a man with his hand on the button that could end the world – bang! My father’s younger than him and we don’t give him the controls for the telly!

Well, it seems it is time to take the controls for the telly away from another US President – Donald Trump.

Yesterday (February 18), at a rally in Melbourne, Florida, Mr Trump referred to a non-existent incident involving refugees, that he claimed took place in Sweden on Friday.

Social media users have since suggested that Mr Trump had been watching Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News, in which the host interviewed documentary film-maker Ami Horowitz about a new film on alleged violence by refugees in Sweden.

So Herr Drumpf was watching TV and confused a documentary film with current events.

One wonders what Kellyanne Conjob had been watching before she concocted her ‘Bowling Green massacre’ story, a few weeks ago.

How long will it be before Herr Drumpf sees The Walking Dead and calls out the troops to fight the zombie apocalypse?

He was using the fictitious incident in Sweden to support his fictitious reasons for banning travel from seven mostly-Muslim countries, and restricting immigration in the interest of national security.

It is true that Sweden has taken in more refugees per capita than any other European nation in recent years and recent incidents of crime involving migrants have sparked a nationwide debate around the country’s status as Europe’s most welcoming country for refugees.

But that does not give America’s president – the man who claims to be fighting ‘fake news’ – the right to create ‘fake news’ about it, just to support his own nonsense policies.

No. That’s not refugees causing trouble but a local police officer.
