Surrey ‘sweetheart deal’ emails show May lied to Parliament. By rights, she should resign

Last Updated: March 9, 2017By

Theresa May in the House of Commons: She loves a bit of corruption.

This evidence is clear. It shows that Theresa May lied to Parliament on Wednesday (March 8) and should be dragged back to explain herself – or tender her resignation.

The emails, from David Hodge, Tory leader of Surrey County Council, and Jonathan Lord, MP for Woking, show that:

  • Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, had given assurances he was trying to identify £30-£40 million for Surrey County Council – and for no other authority; and that
  • Mr Javid had been asked to consider taking money away from every other county – no matter how impoverished – in order to provide public cash for Surrey, one of the richest counties in the UK.

We know that Surrey was persuaded not to raise its council tax past the threshold for holding a referendum on the increase, but how was this achieved, exactly?

Mrs May was deliberately vague about this at PMQs, never once explaining the leaked texts and recordings that have exposed this scandal.

Now she should be brought back to Parliament and made to explain – and resign as well.

There is clear evidence of dishonesty, but who will attempt to enforce it? The nasty party will once again get away with it.

Some chance. If every Tory politician who has lied to Parliament since 2010 was to resign, there would be enough seats left in the chamber for the entire contingent. It has been so bad that I thought they must have sneaked an act through, when MPs were otherwise distracted, allowing lies as standard procedure.

Totally agree. This woman is a disgrace lying through her teeth despite all the background info available. The problem is now its out every council in trouble should have access to the commercial rates funds and stop treating this incident as a one-off trial……fancy that scum bag Tory leader wanting deprive all the other Councils of part of their money to save his Tory backside from some much wanted negative feedback.
