Conservative Government spent more than £17.6 million on consultants for NHS cuts

Management consultants which decide where NHS funding cuts will fall have been paid millions [Image: Getty/iStock].

I’ll just leave this here – with a reminder that STPs (Sustainability and Transformation Plans) are intended to restrict the availability of NHS services and render healthcare ripe for privatisation by provoking public unrest. In my opinion.

Firms including KPMG, McKinsey and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) have made millions of pounds from plans that could lead to the closure or downgrade of NHS hospitals.

Health bosses have spent at least £17.6m on management consultants to draw up the strategies, which earmark cuts to departments and some A&Es.

Sustainability and transformation plans (STPs) have been created in 44 regions in a bid to revolutionise services while saving money in the face of an expected £900m NHS deficit this year.

The Press Association used the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to ask clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) how much has been spent on management consultants to formulate the plans.

The figures show £17,674,998 has been spent so far, though the final bill is likely to be far higher.

Eight out of 44 areas did not respond to the FOI request, while others only provided partial data.

Bearing in mind this is taxpayers money and the NHS has been recruiting and employing the cream of so called internal experts for years why are we needing hugely costly external consultants? Will not give the answer the Government want to hear ie privatise everything?. If their own expensive employed experts are to useless to make a decision or sort out their own internal spending/reorganisations they are obviously not fit for purpose and need to fired asap. Hope that suggestion is in KPMGs reports. And as for those to embarressed to declare their situations on how they are spending our money they are also a disgrace.

Don’t suppose for one minute that our right-wing media will publish this story.

Why is there any need for so-called “consultants”? We need to recruit staff who can do the job they were employed to do rather pass the buck to overpaid and frequently incompetent third parties. Same with local authorities – we pay council officers to administrate who then bring in consultants to do their job, who we also have to pay. Hopefully an incoming Labour government will sweep away all of Thatcher’s internal market, sack the managers and bring back matrons – assuming we actually have an NHS left.
