Alleged data protection breaches cast doubt on Coyne’s Unite union leadership campaign

Last Updated: April 1, 2017By

What is the campaign to make Gerard Coyne the next general secretary of Unite doing with Owen Smith‘s old Labour leadership email list?

Nobody should have that information now – even Mr Smith, or his campaign managers, should have destroyed it as the information was only available to them for a single purpose that no longer exists.

Now we are hearing that the Coyne campaign has access to other email lists as well – also in breach of the Data Protection Act.

Steve Walker of the Skwawkbox blog is submitting information – about all the data apparently being used in violation of the law – to the Information Commissioner.

This Writer looks forward to the announcement of an investigation into how this information came to be used in this way. It will be interesting to see who comes under suspicion.

Clearly Mr Smith will have questions to answer, as will all those who had access to the other databases. But how, exactly, did Mr Coyne gain access to them?

Mr Walker writes:

Now, who would be sufficiently senior in Labour’s leadership and/or in Labour’s staff to have access to multiple, national contact databases – and would want to help Coyne’s campaign that clearly aims to damage Jeremy Corbyn?

He says the list of names cannot be very long. This Writer agrees.

Whose name comes to your mind?

As I said in response to the Skwawkbox post earlier today, in view of the most likely culprit I think the famous bogus Holmes quote is apposite “elementary, my dear Watson”

The smell of bent democracy at all levels. Is this an example of fairness? Can’t keep attacking the Tories bent electorial practices and then do something that is
equally out of order……stooping down to Tory practices might suggest there is Tory blood in that decision somewhere.

NOT SURPRISED, but then Owen Smith seemed to have a direct emailing list he got off someone and somewhere else.

Yea. Mike Sivier. the issues is in linked articles Labour member denied vote then Owen Smith texts her direct asking for their support.

    http://voxpoliticalonline.com/2016/08/27/labour-member-is-denied-vote-in-leader-election-then-owen-smith-txts-to-ask-for-support/

so Labour NEC was passing over members contact details straight to Owen Smith’s campaign team, never got one from Jeremy, even though my vote was taken twice, disabled money taken thrice and banned for 5 years for asking, DON’T YOU THINK LABOUR NEEDS TO SORT ITSELF OUT FIRST BEFORE TRYING TO CONVINCE ANYONE ELSE? seeing it is corrupt and fraudulent, Truth Hurts. But it is still the Truth.

and dont mention the pensions or that Labour said they wanted more disabled people to die and ordered clps Mps and councillors to ignore disabled needs, pligt suffering and deaths.

The references in your last paragraph are to decisions made under a previous Labour leadership and should not be directed at Labour now.
As I’ve mentioned in response to your previous comment, please do not associate the actions of a few individuals within the Labour hierarchy to the party as a whole.
