Here’s what Theresa May has done about the terror threat – and what we all think about it

Last Updated: May 26, 2017By

Great job, Theresa May! You’ve put soldiers on the streets to protect the Queen, yourself, and foreign ambassadors. The rest of us are relying on your depleted police force.

The prime minister presumably thought the people would rally behind her. Here’s what one person thought of that:

The terror attack this week happened in Manchester. Where has Mrs May put the extra manpower?

Mrs May talked about “increasing police levels”. Bearing in mind the fact that she – personally – cut police numbers by more than 20,000, here’s how she managed it:

This policewoman was saying [boldings mine]: “Just to make non-police friends aware, ‘increasing police levels’ means they’ve cancelled all leave and days off for existing rank and file officers, and make them work 14+ hour days 7 days a week. You can’t actually increase police levels without employing more police, as opposed to making millions of pounds of cuts and decreasing the police by 22,000, which is what Theresa May did as Home Secretary. That’s the real reason we need to deploy the army to do the police’s job, because they’ve been stripped to a dangerously low level. I worked for the Met under Labour and Tory, and trust me, this rot started when she was Home Secretary. Thinking of all my old colleagues who won’t see their kids this half term, don’t get a holiday, and are working hours and hours in the hot sun with no breaks, for shit money, and towards a shit pension which they’ll be dead by the time they can claim, due to May also taking that one reward for a life of service away from them.”

Okay, what’s the direction of travel for the Conservatives?

Oh dear.

Oh no.

Ah, but what are our armed forces doing, or supporting the police in doing?

Ah. And the number of terrorists they’ve found this way is… zero. Charming.

Returning to Manchester, which has received no increase at all in security manpower after the attack in the city, perhaps it would be best to ask what Theresa May plans in the future…

That’s conclusive: Mrs May intends to make Manchester less capable of handling terror attacks in the future.

And these Tories are seriously trying to undermine Jeremy Corbyn for making a speech promising better?

Vote Labour on June 8 – for the sake of your country’s security.

The important thing is has she actually woken up to the real world yet. It will be no good her saying whe will reverse the cuts because her record shows she and her backroom buddies are born again liars who will say anything for your vote.

The thing is that what she has done is replace the small number of arms trained officers who work in security roles with armed forces personnel, thereby releasing he arms trained Police to do other important Police roles where they may be needed, seems like a reasonable response to me as we don’t really want a fully armed Police force if we can help it.

No, she got rid of 1,337 armed police officers and then found that she needed them after all.
That meant she had no choice but to pretend that the criteria for Operation Temperer had been met (they have not) and call in the Army.
It’s bad planning, bad policy, and bad governance.
