New plea for ministers to take action on fire risk posed by faulty ‘white goods’

Of course it is understood that the fire at Grenfell Tower was caused by a faulty fridge freezer.

This Site published an article at the beginning of July, pointing out that the London Fire Brigade has been trying to raise awareness of the threat posed by faulty white goods since 2010.

This Writer has personal experience of such a blaze – which caused a huge amount of damage to my home a few years ago.

Until now, these attempts have gone unheard.

Post-Grenfell, will the relevant authorities recover from their selective deafness?

More people will die from fires started by faulty white goods if ministers do not act to implement recommendations, the London Fire Brigade, the city’s mayor, and safety groups have warned.

In a letter to Theresa May, they say some fridges and freezers are being sold with a flammable plastic backing.

People continue to use products that are subject to recalls, it adds.

Back in 2006 I purchased an Indesit Condenser dryer from Curry’s in Southampton. The salesman warned me of the fire hazard then with these dryers. I then purchased a Hotpoint dryer a few years ago which had to eventually be made safe by an engineer Hot point eventually sent out. So the company have known to my knowledge since 2006 about their faulty dryers at least.

one could also point out that people who are poor are more than likely to buy secondhand overused white goods too, which could be more susceptible to fire.

When ever common sense is applied to something like organising recalls and potential fatal exposures from front line services such as the fire brigade, who see it all first hand, the industry immediately start a lobby front to persuade the Government to give them, the white goods industry, control of the pro-response action. Yet nothing robust gets finally delivered to help identify the folk that actually count….the customers and their families. Appreciate the second hand goods exposure is far more difficult and higher risk to manage however something must be done to firm up the warranty registration ownership and having a database of current ownership similar to the car industry that does have car ownership registration to its favour.

mine was brand new indesit condenser dryer. after my bungalow was renovated back in 2008 i could no longer use a tumble dryer as the modern sink unit was 4 inches wider back to front ,than the old one had been , that 4 inches means i can no longer reach to close the window if i managed to open it for the tube to go through from the old tumble dryer.without going outside, in all weathers, trying to unlock the back gate to go push the window to. (gate has to be locked cos being the only bungalow with front ,middle n back gates youngasters hav to choose mine to go through n leave open meaning my dog was at risk of getting out. and i cant run after him. so i lock the back one n had a higher fence put up. anyway i had no option, being disabled, but to buy a condenser dryer which now takes up space in the pantry.and yes,it was one of those on the list of dryers needing either scrapping or repairing. i would have bought a new one but although i could have got one at a greatly reduced price because of this recall of the one i have, i could not afford that or the tumble one at £99.had nowhere for the tumble one to go anyway. besides why should we have to pay for a new one.it had cost enough as it was. that dryer meant i could be more independant . no trying to hang washing out which i cant do anyway now) and no having to have wet washing hanging around affecting my asthma and COPD. and no having to stand trying to iron things that makes my back feel like i have knives sticking in my spine after ironing only 2 small items..just my story on that incident.i believe there are still some dryers awaiting the engineers
