An end to Osborne’s pay ‘con’? Labour plans £10 living wage
The Labour Party is renewing its promise to boost the Tory minimum wage – recently mis-renamed the ‘National Living Wage’ – to make it live up to its new title.
The Tory version of the living wage falls far short of its name, and will worsen over time, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility.
Labour promised to boost it to the full amount in the run-up to the general election in June – and is renewing that promise today.

Labour today continues its wave of campaigning with a pledge to end the “unprecedented” squeeze on wages.
Rebecca Long-Bailey said the party would would boost the pay packets of a quarter of British workers by introducing a real living wage.
In some parts of the country, the benefit would be felt for more than 40 per cent of workers, with Labour’s research shows that real wages – pay packets adjusted for inflation – are still lower than they were before the financial crisis of a decade ago.
Long-Bailey, the shadow business secretary, described the stagnation of real wages as “unprecedented since at least the second world war”.
George Osborne’s national living wage is lower than the real living wage proposed by Labour. It will reach just £8.75 by 2020, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility, not the £9 that had been promised.
For 21-24 year-olds, the wage will be even lower, at just £7.75 by 2020. Labour would raise the national minimum wage to the living wage – expected to be £10 by 2020 – and apply it to all workers aged 18 upwards.

JC needs to abolish the “living wage”! As soon as it came in employers have done away with perks or working benefits, such as paid breaks, extra pay for Sunday and bank holidays, putting it up to £10 is going to cause an already unfair situation worse, because businesses will have to find ways to claw back their dwindling profits.
Also why is a 20 year old’s wage lower, there are so many 16-24 yrs who do not have any family support, and their bills are exactly the same as someone aged 25.
If Labour gets in and they put up the living wage who do you think is ultimately going to end up paying for potential lost profits? Soon working will be seen as a privilege, and you you can bet your last pound that the parasitic Tories will be rubbing their hands in glee.
The living wage was never intended to be well thought out, but then the Tories, no matter how much their education cost, are not known for brains they only count on greed, which is why Jeremy’s Idea to raise it is a very bad Idea!! In my own opinion ( again I might be wrong) He should go back to the old way with the NMW.
He should also make out of hours pay a legal requirement!

Sigh prove this please? Oh you cant all i see for these poor businesses is greater and greater profits. So yes they can pay there workers a wage and stop giving the bosses and shareholders the lion share of the profits off the backs of the workers! Oh and pay there proper share or taxes not become the bargain basement of the world.

Ahhh now we see your real agenda worry you wont be able to take more and more and give less back i that right?
Yes businesses should pay out of hours extra wages, bank holidays etc but as usual the business will squeal oh we cannot pay that! Then next we see them declare record profits at the end of the year so nope no sympathy from me sorry!
Businesses should pay for what they take from the country in taxes at a proper rate, rather than make every person pay the taxes to make the country work.
I should point out that Joanna doesn’t actually run a business herself.
Her comment does suggest she’s been taken in by corporate propaganda, though.
By when? It really needs to be NOW not 2020. and age shouldn’t be a factor in what they pay. A 18 year old might do more than a 60 year old but they are paid less that’s age discrimination pure and simple. if you have a home then your costs are the same as everyone else that has their own place
