May is right to condemn modern slavery – she should start with her government’s work schemes

Last Updated: September 19, 2017By

I agree with Theresa May! Modern slavery does exist – not least in work schemes for benefit claimants operated by the Conservative government.

Long-term readers will know that This Writer is a firm believer in leadership by example. If Mrs May wants people to believe she wants to fight modern slavery, then let her start with the schemes run by the Department for Work and Pensions.

If the DWP sends a benefit claimant to work for a company, then they should receive at least the minimum wage from that company while they are doing the work. Otherwise, they are being forced to work for the benefit of others rather than themselves, which is slavery.

Until she addresses her own government’s behaviour, Mrs May can never be taken seriously on the wider issues.

Over to you, Theresa.

Modern slavery will only be defeated by making more people aware of the horrific abuses going on in their own communities, Theresa May says today.

“It’s great that The Independent and Evening Standard have shone a light on this issue,” she said in an exclusive interview. “A vital part of the answer to this problem is to raise awareness of it.

Well said, Mike. I scrolled down to the Independent article to make your very comment but predictably, they omitted to allow comments since every contribution would point out the obvious that the worst offenders are the UK Government and their impervious-to-basic-human-rights organisation, DWP.

I wonder if when Labour get into office, the police will be sent into the DWP to root out and arrest the people who very clearly bear responsibility for destroying the lives of tens of thousands of decent folk who through no fault of their own found themselves unemployed, disabled or otherwise had their hope and health, mental and physical, irretrievably destroyed by the DWP and their paper-pushing gestapo.

I fear that any evidence will have been shredded long before that happens.

no… although awareness is needed. i think majority of people in the UK are all TOO aware of what is happening here to the poor, vulnerable, unemployed, ill and disabled of this country. the vital part though is doing something about it,not just sitting on those benches in parliament and not giving a toss or understanding that its the government that have condemned the above people to the kind of slavery that comes into the category she is talking about and its of their making, (the govts).
