Austerity policy blamed for record numbers of children taken into care – TORIES couldn’t care less

Children in the poorest areas are 10 times more likely to be taken into care than those in wealthier areas, an ADCS report said [Image: Christopher Thomond for the Guardian].

The relevance of this is self-evident:

Welfare reforms, reductions in family support services such as Sure Start, and rising poverty levels are fuelling record numbers of children being taken into care, local authority leaders have said.

The Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) said austerity policies and an increasingly fragmented approach to public services were taking a toll on communities and punishing the most economically fragile households.

“The unintended consequence of the government’s austerity programme has been to drive up demand for [child protection] services as more and more families find themselves at the point of crisis with little or no early help available,” it said in a report.

young 23yr old new mum/. was renting a room whilst pregnant. the landlady, who knew the girl was pregnant when she let that room to her, waited till she was in hospital, had just given birth 25th sept and gave her 2 weeks notice to quit the room. (this is up next monday 16th oct at 5pm. it is now 10pm on weds 11th oct.) . our local authority housing office/vulnerable adults/various other organisations are involved and still no sign of somewhere for her to live. her mum lives 360miles away. her dad ,aunt and gran all live near her but each are in only 1 bed flats or bungalow . and although each would love to take her in. there simply is not room/ her 75year old gran has said she could stay at hers,lt would mean cot in lounge. the mother sleep on the floor, and it would also mean she no longer comes under the vulnerable adult/high priority label. she needs a place of her own desperately. but this is how it is. she has only 3 working days to find somewhere. private is out as none of her family can be guarantors.and none of them have enough money for deposit/rent in advance and other fees..etc……..this is the truth of todays Britain. a young mum and 16day old baby about to find themselves on the streets as far as the officials are concerned.her family love her but dont want to stand in the way of her getting her own place yet now, in spite of beng told a month before baby was born that when she was born the housing people could help her.yet they are not doing so.

I suspect many Tories are drooling at the thought they may even be able to re-introduce the Poor Law and Workhouses to Britain.
