Theresa Mayhem’s latest nightmare is ‘no-deal’ Brexit

Theresa May said she wanted a deal and believed one was achievable [Image: PA].

The Conservative Party is self-destructing over Brexit. First, Philip Hammond split from Theresa May over spending for a ‘no-deal’ departure from the European Union – he saying there’s no money for it; she saying there’s plenty:

The government will spend whatever is necessary to make sure the UK is ready for Brexit, Downing Street has said.

A No 10 spokesman said £250m of new money had been allocated this year to prepare for leaving the EU, “including the possibility of a no-deal scenario”.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions, Theresa May said “where money needs to be spent it will be spent”.

Earlier, Chancellor Philip Hammond said funding for a no-deal plan would not happen “until the very last moment”.

He suggested it was not wise to spend money – which could alternatively go to the NHS or schools – at this stage on an outcome which may or may not happen, merely to “send a message” to the EU.

In response, several Tory MPs have criticised the Treasury, one accusing it of “incompetence” and another suggesting the EU would not listen to the UK unless it was sure it was seriously preparing for the possibility of leaving in March 2019 without a negotiated agreement.

Then, Liz Truss appeared on the BBC’s Daily Politics, talking about “preparations for all possibilities”. Watch until the end of the clip for her most revealing response:

She didn’t have an answer – because the Tories don’t have one.

And our departure from the Union looms closer all the time.

Tick tock, Tories…

£250 million? so that’s the estimate, at least according to the torie’s (it’s time to stop legitimizing them with a capital!) of what it will take to keep this boat afloat is it. That’s a figure plucked from the air, in fact it’s only enough to employ the 5000 horde of civil servants required to administer the changes for a year, not any off the mechanics to make an actual transition. What this says is the tories are playing a deception game to intentionally land the next (Labour) government with a shortfall to put the changes into practice. If you have any doubt about this do a quick sum on EU linked national expenditure costs and £250M doesn’t even touch the sides.

There was an episode of Yes Prime Minister when Sir Humphrey became alarmed because Jim Hacker wasn’t in his office and Bernard didn’t know where he was provoking Sir Humphrey to exclaim “You mean he’s loose in the building!”. Surely the same concern must apply when Liz Truss goes walkabout.

Unless it’s just another indication of the contempt in which the Tories hold most of us? The conversation at Tory HQ goes something llike “We’d better send someone who’s on the ball to face Andrew Neil” — “No, just send Truss”.

In fairness to Ms Truss I suppose they could have picked anyone from the front bench with the same result?

The Tory Party is breaking up far too slowly. Wish they would speed it up and refrain from taking the whole country into the abyss with them.
