Osborne admits: Labour did NOT cause the Great Recession

George Osborne.

Took him long enough, didn’t it?

He also admits that the Tories had promised to match Labour’s spending plans, in an interview with Andrew Neil for The Spectator‘s Coffee House Shots on October 12 (they went back on that promise when they took office in 2010).

Here’s the relevant clip:

I am left wing. I liked Tony Benn, I voted for Jeremy Cobyn twice. Yet I do blame the government for the crash, but I also blame all other neoliberal government around the world who also had a financial crash. Government is sovereign, government controls the banks, or does not, in this case. Government was to blame for the lack of regulation and control, so yes,the government was responsible. The only wrong thing here, and unfair too, is that the Tories would have, and are doing exactly the same thing, and experts warn of another pending crisis with private debt soaring again. Labour, especially Labour, need to open their Keynes and Abba Lerner books again.

What(!) You mean that £abour DIDN’T cause the recessions in France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the U.S.A., Ireland and the U.K.? What(!) All of those audience members on Question time were wrong(!) All of those Tory politicians lied?
I think that people swallowed the lie because they wanted to. Times were hard and they wanted somebody to blame; they couldn’t take it out on the bankers so, the government got it. Well, that decision has come back to bite us all.
I say that there are 3 things that governments desire; an ignorant electorate, a compliant electorate and an electorate that is at war with itself. This government is doing a pretty good job of achieving these ends.
