In the midst of all the sexual harassment allegations: THIS. What message are we receiving, here?

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez: “Sexy AF”? Or just “WTF”?

Consider the message below – the txt with which former baseball star Alex Rodriguez apparently won the heart of singer and actor Jennifer Lopez:

“You look sexy AF”

It was reported by the i newspaper online and – feel free to correct me if I’m taking it all too seriously, but is it the right time to be reporting such revelations?

Sure, it may have been wonderful for the couple in question but we are in the midst of a series of scandals in which (in the main) powerful men have been accused of making inappropriate approaches to attractive women.

How would it look if this article was reporting on Harvey Weinstein txting

“You look sexy AF”

to some Hollywood film star? Clearly “AF” means “as f***”, by the way.

How about if it was Stephen Crabb, txting someone he’d denied a job in his office?

How does that look?

Sure, context is everything, but what are we supposed to get from this story?

That it’s okay to send a txt that, on the face of it is at least a little creepy, if the person has just confided in you that she doesn’t have a partner?

That it’s okay to send it if you’re in a position of power – a big star in your field, perhaps?

That it’s okay to suggest that not all such behaviour may be inappropriate, in the middle of a series of scandals in which it definitely is?

Perhaps I’m taking it all too seriously – especially as certain people have chosen to try to make a big joke out of some horrific situations.

Am I? You tell me.

I think you are onto something here Mike. This story has emerged purely to muddy the waters, and let some of the more despicable perpetrators off the hook. Well spotted.

I agree with what you’re getting at and as you say “context is everything”

Last week before this became a public issue, I innocently said to my local shopkeeper “I swear that you look younger and prettier each time I see you” said simply to pick up her spirits rather than as a chat-up line. (and she knows that)

Another female customer called me mysoginistic, sexist and patronising which shocked me as that was certainly not my intent.

I can’t figure who was in the wrong so I’ll just keep my compliments to myself in future just to be safe.

I think you are taking some things too seriously. Many of your posts are about people taking offence at other peoples comments or actions. Society has always had a nasty streak.. Not everyone is the same as you. There are plenty of people who will make derogatory remarks about race, sex, religion, class, intellect etc. There are also plenty of people who will take offence at the most inane comment or action. Am I offended when people say I’m uneducated because I voted to leave the EU?
Not really, because I know having a degree, doesn’t always mean you’re more intelligent or educated than someone without.
You have to make allowances because people don’t always think before they speak.
I’m as guilty as anyone. I remember at a football match, many years ago. A disabled man calling my brother an Irish bas***d
My immediate response was F**ck off you sp***ic.
I have always regretted saying that , but like I said, people don’t always think before they speak.
    One other comment I’ll make..
I know you’re totally involved with what you do and you’re obviously passionate about your political views,, I do think you post too much. I don’t get enough time to read it all. There is hardly any comment any more. The same few bloggers are there.. “So and so,, like this”.
I can’t believe the bloke with the flag likes everything.. Or even reads everything!
    And why don’t they comment?
There is no political discussion anymore. Just unreasonableness on all sides.
