Michael Fallon was forced to quit as Defence Secretary because evidence was piling up against him. What is it?

It seems there was a lot more evidence supporting Sir Michael Fallon’s resignation than we had previously believed.

Downing Street was compiling a “list of alleged incidents” involving the former Defence Secretary.

How many? Involving what behaviour? Over what length of time?

Depending on the answers to these questions, the police need to be involved.

But, knowing how the Conservatives have responded to every allegation so far, does anybody really trust them to do the right thing?

The cabinet heavyweight’s shock departure on Wednesday followed a phone call from the journalist, Jane Merrick, who informed Downing Street that he had lunged at her and attempted to kiss her on the lips in 2003 after they had lunched together.

The revelation was the tipping point for No 10, which the Observer understands had been compiling a list of alleged incidents involving Fallon since claims against him were first made.

Too much going on in the way of “informal enquiries” by political parties especially with the whips using info for blackmail. Just hand it to the police, (though I hesitate to say that knowing how under-resourced the police are.) But the police would sort out the criminal stuff to be dealt with, and the parties should then refer the inappropriate behaviour level allegations that the police don’t consider to be criminal, to an independent body.

Resignation is a way these people have of stopping any further enquiries into their (mis)conduct. They wait a few years and then creep back in. It worked for the odious and loathsome Fox. I suspect that as far as Fallon is concerned, all we have at the moment is the tip of the iceberg.

Fallon (allegedly) lunging at a woman and trying to kiss her on the lips whilst having lunch is sick makingly horrible. He appears to be unable, or unwilling, to control his base instincs. A few days ago when he was still Defence Secretary he was spouting the idea that the UK should stand shoulder to shoulder with US in attacking North Korea. Silly, pompous man.
