Government has until Tuesday evening to publish Brexit assessments – or what?

Last Updated: November 6, 2017By

John Bercow.

It is excellent that Mr Bercow is pushing the minority Conservative government to keep its promise and publish the Brexit impact assessments – as demanded by Parliament last week.

But what if it doesn’t?

Mr Bercow said at the end of the debate on the release of the assessments that he would certainly consider applications to hold the government in contempt of Parliament in such a case.

That would be a serious step.

Could it lead to the downfall of the current charade of a government? This Writer doesn’t know.

Will Theresa May and her Brexit team allow matters to go that far? Again, I have no idea.

As I type this on Monday evening, it seems Tuesday should be an interesting day in Parliament.

John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has set the government a deadline of Tuesday evening to publish the Brexit assessments demanded by parliament – or explain why it has not done so.

MPs voted unanimously last Wednesday to call on David Davis’s department to release its studies of the impact of Brexit on various sectors of the UK economy, after he published a list of the 58 sectors covered.

Asked by the shadow Brexit minister, Matthew Pennycook, on Monday whether the government was treating the vote with “the respect and seriousness it requires”, Bercow said it should comply “very promptly indeed”.

He added: “Failing that, I expect ministers to explain to the house before we rise tomorrow evening why they have not and when they intend to do so.”

The sooner these reports are published the better. It is most definitely in the public interest, but how much of them will be redacted?

Anti Brexit Bercow attempt to derail the negotiations would have been a better headline, after all why should someones fiction on the outcome of brexit be such an issue unless you want to undermine the process?

The biggest fiction is that the Tories are capable of negotiating the UK’s way out of the European Union in anything like an acceptable manner. Best to scrap the whole idea.
