Corbyn criticises Esther McVey promotion but condemns online abuse – as does This Site

Does he mean This Site? Surely not!

There has certainly been a huge amount of ill-feeling towards Esther McVey’s appointment as Work and Pensions Secretary – all of it entirely justified, in the opinion of This Writer.

Ms McVey’s record speaks for itself – and it makes grim reading, as those who saw my article earlier this week know very well.

But some people have resorted to abuse, and worse. Threats of violence and death have no place in civilised political discourse, and those of us who oppose Ms McVey should not lower ourselves to her level.

We defeat Tories by being better than them – not by being as bad.

Jeremy Corbyn believes the appointment of Esther McVey as work and pensions secretary is alarming, his spokesman has said, while condemning online abuse of the newly promoted MP.

Her appointment this week to the work and pensions post has been widely criticised on social media.

Asked whether Corbyn would condemn such attacks, his spokesman said: “Jeremy has made clear time and again that he is opposed to all forms of online harassment and abuse, and if there are such cases then they obviously should not take place.”

But he went on: “Esther McVey is extremely unpopular because of her record in the last government as a DWP minister and the treatment of disabled people under that government, so it’s not encouraging at all – it’s alarming – that she’s now taken on this role, with all the baggage that goes with that.”

Asked about separate comments by [John] McDonnell about McVey being a “stain of inhumanity”, the spokesman said: “He’s obviously very critical of Esther McVey because of her record… He has a very strong view that her record was, and has been, disastrous and very damaging for disabled people.”

[John] McDonnell made that statement and for a good reason. yes it was a harsh statement to make but with so many welfare reform deaths with regarding the long term sick and disabled what else could he have said

what would be online abuse compared to the “real” damage this woman has inflicted to people? In the end you should get back what you disseminate…

They don’t seem spectacularly offensive or threatening.

Back the people who have suffered personally including loosing loved ones they either hide and in some cases their own lives or they come out fighting, I detest the language used and the threats are abhorrent, but in this case lines between politics and it being very personal are blurred, the reasons for it are clear however vile the abuse, I certainly do not condone it, I just understand it.

Your continued use of the term ‘This Writer’ is as annoying as it is risible, in English we use the word ‘I’ when referring to ourselves, perhaps you should try it . . .

It’s not unreasonable for people to slanderously judge Esther McVey on her past record of prejudice to the disabled The fact that she has accepted this toxic position given her history of a barely concealed hate campaign illustrates both her and May’s determination to continue this genocide against marginal groups. It seems these individuals care not for their future reputation, or becoming hate figures in the annuls of historical fact. The Tory party would benefit from a sincere introspection of themselves for the reasons why such public malevolence is familiar.

It is always unreasonable for people to slander (or libel, as the written version is legally defined).
      Always stick to the facts.
