While Tories bitch about Labour, Labour concentrates on the big issues facing the UK

The weekend is turning out to be a big one for announcements by the Labour Party – and they all seem pretty good.

Linking renationalisation of the energy system with green power and the prevention of what Jeremy Corbyn calls “climate catastrophe” is a great start, as is the pledge to ban fracking and the others listed below.

Jeremy Corbyn has vowed to make averting “climate catastrophe” a central aim if he wins power, arguing it can only be achieved with public ownership of Britain’s energy system.

In his most pro-environment speech, the Labour leader said his government would be “at least as radical” as the post-war Clement Attlee administration which built the NHS and the welfare state.

Labour would sweep away the “centralised system” of energy delivery, dominated by the much-criticised Big Six private firms, in favour of one with “new sources of energy large and small”, Mr Corbyn said.

The party has also pledged to ban fracking, insulate 4 million homes, deliver 60 per cent of energy from renewable sources by 2030 and plant a million native trees.

But wait! There’s more.

Labour’s plans to bring services into public ownership would cost “absolutely nothing”, John McDonnell has said.

The shadow chancellor outlined an agenda to put public services “irreversibly in the hands of workers” so they could “never again be taken away”.

The shadow chancellor told Labour’s alternative models of ownership conference: “The next Labour government will put democratically owned and managed public services irreversibly in the hands of workers, and of those who rely on their work.

“We will do this not only because it’s right, not only because it’s the most efficient way of running them, but also because the most important protection of our public services for the long term is for everyone to have and feel ownership of them.

“We aren’t going to take back control of these industries in order to put them into the hands of a remote bureaucracy, but to put them into the hands of all of you – so that they can never again be taken away.”

The announcement of nationalisation being cost-neutral is not news to some of us, of course.

When you consider the amount of our money that is leaving the UK because the Tories sold off our utility companies to foreign governments, it is as plain as the nose on your face.

Apparently the plan is to have the utilities run by workers’ co-operatives:

Against, This Writer supports the idea – I have written on this subject previously.

Meanwhile, the Tories hold hugely expensive meals for themselves, at which they tell each other that their divisive, elitist ways are better. They are living a fantasy.

Now he just needs to back a 2nd referendum and he will be as a god to modern politics again!

The BBC picked on the renationalisation of the supply of water last night (Saturday). Needless to say it was fact light and sneer heavy. Clive Myrie and another BBC correspondent, whose name escapes me, attempted to decry a fully costed policy of the real Labour Party in a couple of minutes. It was not unlike watching two school boys sniggering behind the bike shed.

I think Corbyn has mentioned a ‘Government Bond’, this is something akin to the Bradbury Pound, issued Interest free for social infrastructure. All our Transport, Industry and Utilities were sold off to Corporations, they don’t want competition from Government [Public Services] which is why they were to be given to Corporations under TTIP-TPP-CETA, that’s what the TiSA was, Trust in Services Agreement. It’s why they are now attacking NHS, Education, Police & Judiciary because there’s money to be made here. They wouldn’t want it if there wasn’t!

Public Transport should be non-profit making, just enough to service repairs and fleet replacement. Taxes already cover road and rail repair, we’re also paying for a new Energy Plant, as shareholders waltz off with the profits! The majority of manufacturing in this country today, is all owned by Foreign companies which are in turn owned by American Corporations.

Lets start building Trains, Buses, Cars & Ships again, give them some competition

I am now 66 years old, a Socialist for 50 years and I never thought I would see the day when a likely next Labour Chancellor would be talking , practically, about new forms of public ownership, workers democracy, co-operatives etc. “Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, but to be old was very heaven” as that sell-out , Wordsworth, didn’t quite put it. More power to McDonnell’s elbow.
