Northern Ireland power-sharing deal falls through because of toxic DUP delay

Last Updated: February 13, 2018By

Theresa May: ‘While some differences remain, I believe it is possible to see the basis of an agreement.’ Yeah, right. That’s the best she has managed after more than a year. [Image: Charles McQuillan/Getty Images.]

How utterly ridiculous.

The DUP has scuppered a restored power-sharing deal in Northern Ireland because its members don’t like the idea of giving Gaelic – the Irish language – parity with English.

What’s the matter with them?

Welsh has parity with English here in – guess where? – Wales, and it hasn’t led to any erosion of the Union.

It’s just a dumb excuse to cause trouble.

And these are the people Theresa May needs to appease, in order to stay in government.

It isn’t worth it. The risk in Northern Ireland is too great, let alone the damage being done to the infrastructure and the people of the UK as a whole.

Mrs May should have accepted the inevitable last June.

Soon, it won’t matter how much rosy spin she puts on her bad news. Everybody will know that she is the bad news.

She should quit now.

Theresa May has left Northern Ireland without a deal that would have seen the restoration of power-sharing government in the region.

The prime minister and the Irish taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, had travelled to Belfast on Monday hoping that the main parties represented in the Stormont assembly would reach a compromise ending 13 months of political deadlock.

But for the second time in less than a year the Democratic Unionist party kept May waiting.

May, her party and the DUP, are, either, totally thick, or they want to create the troubles yet again!
Ireland is the Elephant in the room, for a good brexit or a bad one!
I have no doubt, if the border is left open, with no controls, then it will happen in all of the UK!
Along, with trading in the common market, no ifs no buts!
May and the Tories can’t keep us all in the dark much longer, we are not mushrooms!
I feel, another referendum coming on!

No power share deal in Northern Ireland because the DUP won’t give Gaelic equal status with the English language. Pathetic. Theresa May can go on kidding herself, but direct rule is kind of inevitable as over a year as gone by with agreement between Seinn Feinn and the DUP. This the party that Conservatives rely on in Westminster for confidence to remain in power. Putting at risk vital public services not only in Northern Ireland but the rest of the UK.

That should be “with NO agreement between Sinn Fein and the DUP”, I think.

HURRAH! We knew it would not last. not out the woods yet or the shark infested waters. And it will take more than sacking May or her stepping down and being replaced by another career obsessed individual to get Britain the best deal and stand up to all. And get through with Brains not Bigotry and hardline blinkers

The Tory-DUP alliance is still going on, even though the DUP keeps tripping Mrs May up. And you’re right – Mrs May should stay in post so all the Tories eventually go down with her.

Remember, working and talking together would help long term peace. A bit like sectarian education keeps people apart and then they treat them as ‘other’!

Will the Tories get the money back, The north should join the South it would make a great country

No, because the Tory alliance with the DUP is still going. It’s the power-sharing agreement between the DUP and Sinn Fein that has stalled.

The Tories and their terrorist sympathiser partners. Evils joined by corrupt money.

More magical thinking. If you cover your eyes the problem disappears. Mrs May, Arlene Foster & Co. it’s about time you woke up to reality.

It’s what happens when you give bigots some power: they always abuse it. They know they have May over a barrel and they are happy to shaft her (sorry if the mental image offends).

If anyone thought there was going to be a ‘deal’, they were living in cloud cuckoo land. I for one was not holding my breath and this ‘news’ does not surprise me in the least. There will be no deal. What the eventual outcome will be is anybody’s guess. DUP are shooting themselves in the foot with a machine gun. If Brexit happens – and it appears it will be a hard one – the future will be decidedly interesting.

The DUP are very close to the UDA a paramilitary organisation involved in various types of Criminality and the TORIES should look very closely at any arrangement they have with them. It could well be that it will come back to bite them

The loyal orders appear to have scuppered any consensus that might have been on the table.

And there must have been one –
otherwise why would 2 PMs make an emergency dash to Northern Ireland?

I hope Westminster is happy the sectarian Orange Order seems to be pulling the strings of the DUP and hence the UK government
