Badger cull could be extended to eight more counties – pointlessly?

Last Updated: March 6, 2018By

Evidence shows that culling badgers does not help control bovine tuberculosis – it’s just cruelty to a wild animal.

The fact that none of the badgers killed in the most recent culling were tested for the disease adds weight to claims that it is pointless.

But eight more counties want to start a cull.

Why?

Officials are plotting to widen the controversial badger cull in a fresh blow to campaigners’ calls to halt the bloodshed.

More than 19,000 animals died in last year’s cull across eight English counties: Dorset, Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Cheshire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Natural England has received applications to expand this year’s cull scheme to eight more counties: Avon, Berkshire, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.

Animals rights activists had been heartened last month when Environment Secretary Michael Gove refused to commit to continuing with the cull as a way of controlling bovine tuberculosis in cattle.

Experts blame badgers for spreading the disease across the countryside.

But none of the dead creatures was tested through a vet’s post-mortem examination to see if it carried the disease.

Absolutely pointless. It has been proven that cattle will not go near land on which a badger has been. Apparently something to do with badger poo. But then these are experts and this government does not do experts.

I do not believe Michael Gove has any intention of ceasing the badger cull He is but a front man who placates the people protesting

Pointless killing. Tb rates are still rising in areas where culling has taken place. This fool government ignores the advice of its own experts.

The Tories disregard for animals shows their attitude towards human beings.

Deaths on our streets is another example of their low respect for any form of life.

I only wish we could cull them, they are the worst form of vermin this country has had the misfortune to suffer under.
