In other words, there wasn’t any evidence against him.

You’ll remember This Site published an article on the suspension of Glyn Secker’s Labour Party membership. He had been told: “Allegations that you may have been involved in a breach of Labour Party rules have been brought to the attention of national officers of the Party. These allegations relate to comments made on social media that may be in (sic) anti Semitic and therefore in breach of Labour Party rules.”

I speculated on what the allegations may be – and turned out to be wrong. They were about Mr Secker’s membership of a Facebook page called Palestine Live.

Now, Jewish Voice for Labour has published a letter from Sam Matthews, Labour’s head of disputes, restoring his party membership.

It states:

“As you aware [sic], on the 7th March 2018 the Labour Party wrote to you to administratively suspend you from the Party. This action was taken in light of the publication of the report into the ‘Palestine Live’ Facebook group. It was important that the allegations relating this group were investigated.

“Following the publication of the reports on the ‘Palestine Live’ Facebook group, it was necessary for the Party to take swift action in relation to those members who may have been implicated in breaches of the Party’s rules.

“Having fully reviewed the evidence available to the Party, it would not be in the Party’s interests to pursue further disciplinary action in relation to this matter. Your administrative suspension has therefore been lifted.”

In other words, the accusations turned out to be false.

The JVL article at the time of Mr Secker’s suspension pointed out: “No accuser is known, the charge is appallingly vague, no evidence produced.” We may now assume that there isn’t any evidence and won’t be a charge.

But why is the accuser being protected?

Someone made an entirely false and, we may conclude, malicious claim of anti-Semitism against a man who is secretary of JVL and a director of Jews For Justice For Palestinians. Now, instead of being exposed, that person is being protected – so they can make more false accusations?

As the JVL article rightly stated, “Nothing is doing more to bring the Party into disrepute than the shocking use of unsubstantiated allegations to punish active members of the left without  knowledge of charges, on the merest say-so of those who oppose their political stance, and in defiance of the recommendations of the Chakrabarti Report.”

Sam Matthews needs to come clean: Who made the false accusations against Mr Secker – and what action is being taken to punish that person for bringing the Labour Party into disrepute by doing so?
