Labour should be applauded for announcing plan to protect social housing

Last Updated: March 18, 2018By

What exactly was the point of the Coalition policy to turn council houses into ‘affordable’ homes that weren’t actually affordable?

If it was aimed at getting more money circulating through the economy, rather than stagnating in people’s bank accounts, then the Tories and the Liberal Democrats chose the wrong targets.

People in council houses hardly have enough money to support them as it is; forcing them to pay more simply pushes them into poverty and debt.

I know there’s an argument that the Tories have been busily converting national debt into private debt, and this could be a part of that agenda – removing the responsibility for housing from local authorities and forcing tenants to pay extra.

But if people are forced out of their homes because rents have been hiked to unaffordable levels, then nobody gets any money at all. How does that help the economy?

It doesn’t.

We need a government that understands the economy has to work for everyone – or everyone will be harmed.

Labour has unveiled plans to stem the loss of low-cost homes as new analysis reveals more than 100,000 social homes have been converted into a more expensive type of property in the last six years alone.

The party said it would scrap a policy introduced by the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition government in 2012 that forces housing associations and local councils to raise rents by an average of 40 per cent by converting social homes into “affordable homes”.

The announcement is the second to come out of Labour’s review into the future of social housing, which is likely to report in the coming weeks.

Blair should have immediately cancelled ‘right to buy’ her charter for making private grasping landlords rich

Council houses should never have been flogged off cheap to their tenants in the first place.

It is clear that the tory policy is to discount the poorest among us and only deal with those able to help themselves to the honey pot. They have given tax benefits to the richest and are busy taking everything from the lowest paid. It makes a mockery of the working people striving to make life better for themselves when, despite the low level of “The minimum wage” which ensures poverty when coupled to “Zero hour contracts.” We never have liked the “Crumbs from the table” punishment the Tories always love to lay upon the good people, and all it needs is the proper scrutiny of elections, especially using the postal votes of others and shifting boundaries to make sure of a tory Victory. Will we ever get a level playing field from these villains? I doubt it!

The Tory idea of selling off Council Housing was purely to line their own pockets. That is their only principle – enriching themselves at the expense of the majority.
