Does anyone remember Godwin’s Law?

It’s the argument that, the longer an argument continues, the more likely it becomes that someone will make a comparison with Adolf Hitler.

Vladimir Putin hosting the World Cup is like Adolf Hitler hosting the Olympics in 1936, UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson suggested on Wednesday.

Asked by Labour MP Ian Austin at Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee whether Russia’s hosting of the games was comparable to Nazi Germany’s hosting of the Olympic games, Johnson replied that the comparison was “certainly right.

“I think the comparison with 1936 is certainly right. It is an emetic prospect to think of Putin glorifying in this sporting event,” he told Austin.

Perhaps the most pertinent objection is the fact that 20 million Russians died defeating Hitler and the Nazis in World War II. Whatever our quarrels with that country now, the comparison with Hitler and his government is hugely insulting to the memory of those people:

Russia’s reaction has been predictable:

The Russian foreign ministry responded to Johnson’s remarks by saying he was “poisoned with venom of hate, unprofessionalism and boorishness”. It said: “It’s scary to remember that this person represents the political leadership of a nuclear power.”

Putting aside the current tensions between the UK and Russia, This Writer tends to agree: The prospect of Boris Johnson having an input into whether the UK presses the nuclear trigger is scary.
